| Then, opening his mouth, and cursing the day of his birth, | Allora Giobbe aprì la bocca e maledisse il giorno della sua nascita. |
| Job made answer and said, | E prese a dire così: |
| Let destruction take the day of my birth, and the night on which it was said, A man child has come into the world. | "Perisca il giorno ch’io nacqui e la notte che disse: "E’ concepito un maschio!" |
| That day--let it be dark; let not God take note of it from on high, and let not the light be shining on it; | Quel giorno si converta in tenebre, non se ne curi Iddio dall’alto, né splenda sovr’esso raggio di luce! |
| Let the dark and the black night take it for themselves; let it be covered with a cloud; let the dark shades of day send fear on it. | Se lo riprendano le tenebre e l’ombra di morte, resti sovr’esso una fitta nuvola, le eclissi lo riempian di paura! |
| That night--let the thick dark take it; let it not have joy among the days of the year; let it not come into the number of the months. | Quella notte diventi preda d’un buio cupo, non abbia la gioia di contar tra i giorni dell’anno, non entri nel novero de’ mesi! |
| As for that night, let it have no fruit; let no voice of joy be sounded in it; | Quella notte sia notte sterile, e non vi s’oda grido di gioia. |
| Let it be cursed by those who put a curse on the day; who are ready to make Leviathan awake. | La maledicano quei che maledicono i giorni e sono esperti nell’evocare il drago. |

| With kings and the wise ones of the earth, who put up great houses for themselves; | coi re e coi consiglieri della terra che si edificarono mausolei, |
| Or with rulers who had gold, and whose houses were full of silver; | coi principi che possedean dell’oro e che empiron d’argento le lor case; |
| Or as a child dead at birth I might never have come into existence; like young children who have not seen the light. | o, come l’aborto nascosto, non esisterei, sarei come i feti che non videro la luce. |
| There the passions of the evil are over, and those whose strength has come to an end have rest. | Là cessano gli empi di tormentare gli altri. Là riposano gli stanchi, |
| There the prisoners are at peace together; the voice of the overseer comes not again to their ears. | là i prigioni han requie tutti insieme, senz’udir voce d’aguzzino. |
| The small and the great are there, and the servant is free from his master. | Piccoli e grandi sono là del pari, e lo schiavo è libero del suo padrone. |
| Why does he give light to him who is in trouble, and life to the bitter in soul; | Perché dar la luce all’infelice e la vita a chi ha l’anima nell’amarezza, |
| To those whose desire is for death, but it comes not; who are searching for it more than for secret wealth; | i quali aspettano la morte che non viene, e la ricercano più che i tesori nascosti, |
| Who are glad with great joy, and full of delight when they come to their last resting-place; | e si rallegrerebbero fino a giubilarne, esulterebbero se trovassero una tomba? |
| To a man whose way is veiled, and who is shut in by God? | Perché dar vita a un uomo la cui via è oscura? e che Dio ha stretto in un cerchio? |
| In place of my food I have grief, and cries of sorrow come from me like water. | Io sospiro anche quando prendo il mio cibo, e i miei gemiti si spandono com’acqua. |
| For I have a fear and it comes on me, and my heart is greatly troubled. | Non appena temo un male, ch’esso mi colpisce; e quel che pavento, mi piomba addosso. |
| I have no peace, no quiet, and no rest; nothing but pain comes on me. | Non trovo posa, né requie, né pace, il tormento è continuo!" |
