| And Eliphaz the Temanite made answer and said, | Allora Elifaz di Teman rispose disse: |
| If one says a word, will it be a weariness to you? but who is able to keep from saying what is in his mind? | "Se provassimo a dirti una parola ti darebbe fastidio? Ma chi potrebbe trattener le parole? |
| Truly, you have been a helper to others, and you have made feeble hands strong; | Ecco tu n’hai ammaestrati molti, hai fortificato le mani stanche; |
| He who was near to falling has been lifted up by your words, and you have given strength to bent knees. | le tue parole hanno rialzato chi stava cadendo, hai raffermato le ginocchia vacillanti; |
| But now it has come on you and it is a weariness to you; you are touched by it and your mind is troubled. | e ora che il male piomba su te, tu ti lasci abbattere; ora ch’è giunto fino a te, sei tutto smarrito. |
| Is not your fear of God your support, and your upright way of life your hope? | La tua pietà non è forse la tua fiducia, e l’integrità della tua vita la speranza tua? |
| Have you ever seen destruction come to an upright man? or when were the god-fearing ever cut off? | Ricorda: quale innocente perì mai? e dove furono gli uomini retti mai distrutti? |
| What I have seen is that those by whom trouble has been ploughed, and evil planted, get the same for themselves. | Io per me ho visto che coloro che arano iniquità e seminano tormenti, ne mietono i frutti. |
| By the breath of God destruction takes them, and by the wind of his wrath they are cut off. | Al soffio di Dio essi periscono, dal vento del suo corruccio son consumati. |
| Though the noise of the lion and the sounding of his voice, may be loud, the teeth of the young lions are broken. | Spenta è la voce del ruggente, sono spezzati i denti dei leoncelli. |
| The old lion comes to his end for need of food, and the young of the she-lion go wandering in all directions. | Perisce per mancanza di preda il forte leone, e restan dispersi i piccini della leonessa. |
| A word was given to me secretly, and the low sound of it came to my ears. | Una parola m’è furtivamente giunta, e il mio orecchio ne ha còlto il lieve sussurro. |
| In troubled thoughts from visions of the night, when deep sleep comes on men, | Fra i pensieri delle visioni notturne, quando un sonno profondo cade sui mortali, |
| Fear came on me and shaking, and my bones were full of trouble; | uno spavento mi prese, un tremore che mi fece fremer tutte l’ossa. |
| And a breath was moving over my face; the hair of my flesh became stiff: | Uno spirito mi passò dinanzi, e i peli mi si rizzarono addosso. |
| Something was present before me, but I was not able to see it clearly; there was a form before my eyes: a quiet voice came to my ears, saying: | Si fermò, ma non riconobbi il suo sembiante; una figura mi stava davanti agli occhi e udii una voce sommessa che diceva: |
| May a man be upright before God? or a man be clean before his Maker? | "Può il mortale esser giusto dinanzi a Dio? Può l’uomo esser puro dinanzi al suo Fattore? |
| Truly, he puts no faith in his servants, and he sees error in his angels; | Ecco, Iddio non si fida de’ suoi propri servi, e trova difetti nei suoi angeli; |
| How much more those living in houses of earth, whose bases are in the dust! They are crushed more quickly than an insect; | quanto più in quelli che stanno in case d’argilla, che han per fondamento la polvere e son schiacciati al par delle tignuole! |
| Between morning and evening they are completely broken; they come to an end for ever, and no one takes note. | Tra la mattina e la sera sono infranti; periscono per sempre, senza che alcuno se ne accorga. |
| If their tent-cord is pulled up, do they not come to an end, and without wisdom? | La corda della lor tenda, ecco, è strappata, e muoion senza posseder la sapienza". |
