| And Eliphaz the Temanite made answer and said, | Da antwortete Eliphas von Theman und sprach: |
| If one says a word, will it be a weariness to you? but who is able to keep from saying what is in his mind? | Du hast's vielleicht nicht gern, so man versucht, mit dir zu reden; aber wer kann sich's enthalten? |
| Truly, you have been a helper to others, and you have made feeble hands strong; | Siehe, du hast viele unterwiesen und lässige Hände gestärkt; |
| He who was near to falling has been lifted up by your words, and you have given strength to bent knees. | deine Rede hat die Gefallenen aufgerichtet, und die bebenden Kniee hast du gekräftigt. |
| But now it has come on you and it is a weariness to you; you are touched by it and your mind is troubled. | Nun aber es an dich kommt, wirst du weich; und nun es dich trifft, erschrickst du. |
| Is not your fear of God your support, and your upright way of life your hope? | Ist nicht deine Gottesfurcht dein Trost, deine Hoffnung die Unsträflichkeit deiner Wege? |
| Have you ever seen destruction come to an upright man? or when were the god-fearing ever cut off? | Gedenke doch, wo ist ein Unschuldiger umgekommen? oder wo sind die Gerechten je vertilgt? |
| What I have seen is that those by whom trouble has been ploughed, and evil planted, get the same for themselves. | Wie ich wohl gesehen habe: die da Mühe pflügen und Unglück säten, ernteten es auch ein; |
| By the breath of God destruction takes them, and by the wind of his wrath they are cut off. | durch den Odem Gottes sind sie umgekommen und vom Geist seines Zorns vertilgt. |
| Though the noise of the lion and the sounding of his voice, may be loud, the teeth of the young lions are broken. | Das Brüllen der Löwen und die Stimme der großen Löwen und die Zähne der jungen Löwen sind zerbrochen. |
| The old lion comes to his end for need of food, and the young of the she-lion go wandering in all directions. | Der Löwe ist umgekommen, daß er nicht mehr raubt, und die Jungen der Löwin sind zerstreut. |
| A word was given to me secretly, and the low sound of it came to my ears. | Und zu mir ist gekommen ein heimlich Wort, und mein Ohr hat ein Wörtlein davon empfangen. |
| In troubled thoughts from visions of the night, when deep sleep comes on men, | Da ich Gesichte betrachtete in der Nacht, wenn der Schlaf auf die Leute fällt, |
| Fear came on me and shaking, and my bones were full of trouble; | da kam mich Furcht und Zittern an, und alle meine Gebeine erschraken. |
| And a breath was moving over my face; the hair of my flesh became stiff: | Und da der Geist an mir vorüberging standen mir die Haare zu Berge an meinem Leibe. |
| Something was present before me, but I was not able to see it clearly; there was a form before my eyes: a quiet voice came to my ears, saying: | Da stand ein Bild vor meinen Augen, und ich kannte seine Gestalt nicht; es war still, und ich hörte eine Stimme: |
| May a man be upright before God? or a man be clean before his Maker? | Wie kann ein Mensch gerecht sein vor Gott? oder ein Mann rein sein vor dem, der ihn gemacht hat? |
| Truly, he puts no faith in his servants, and he sees error in his angels; | Siehe, unter seinen Knechten ist keiner ohne Tadel, und seine Boten zeiht er der Torheit: |
| How much more those living in houses of earth, whose bases are in the dust! They are crushed more quickly than an insect; | wie viel mehr die in Lehmhäusern wohnen und auf Erde gegründet sind und werden von Würmern gefressen! |
| Between morning and evening they are completely broken; they come to an end for ever, and no one takes note. | Es währt vom Morgen bis an den Abend, so werden sie zerschlagen; und ehe sie es gewahr werden, sind sie gar dahin, |
| If their tent-cord is pulled up, do they not come to an end, and without wisdom? | und ihre Nachgelassenen vergehen und sterben auch unversehens. |
