| Il cuore del re, nella mano dell’Eterno, è come un corso d’acqua; egli lo volge dovunque gli piace. | The king's heart in the hands of the Lord is like the water streams, and by him it is turned in any direction at his pleasure. |
| Tutte le vie dell’uomo gli paion diritte, ma l’Eterno pesa i cuori. | Every way of a man seems right to himself, but the Lord is the tester of hearts. |
| Praticare la giustizia e l’equità è cosa che l’Eterno preferisce ai sacrifizi. | To do what is right and true is more pleasing to the Lord than an offering. |
| Gli occhi alteri e il cuor gonfio, lucerna degli empi, sono peccato. | A high look and a heart of pride, *** of the evil-doer is sin. |
| I disegni dell’uomo diligente menano sicuramente all’abbondanza, ma chi troppo s’affretta non fa che cader nella miseria. | The purposes of the man of industry have their outcome only in wealth; but one who is over-quick in acting will only come to be in need. |
| I tesori acquistati con lingua bugiarda sono un soffio fugace di gente che cerca la morte. | He who gets stores of wealth by a false tongue, is going after what is only breath, and searching for death. |
| La violenza degli empi li porta via, perché rifiutano di praticare l’equità. | By their violent acts the evil-doers will be pulled away, because they have no desire to do what is right. |
| La via del colpevole è tortuosa, ma l’innocente opera con rettitudine. | Twisted is the way of him who is full of crime; but as for him whose heart is clean, his work is upright. |
| Meglio abitare sul canto d’un tetto, che una gran casa con una moglie rissosa. | It is better to be living in an angle of the house-top, than with a bitter-tongued woman in a wide house. |
| L’anima dell’empio desidera il male; il suo amico stesso non trova pietà agli occhi di lui. | The desire of the evil-doer is fixed on evil: he has no kind feeling for his neighbour. |
| Quando il beffardo è punito, il semplice diventa savio; e quando s’istruisce il savio, egli acquista scienza. | When the man of pride undergoes punishment, the simple man gets wisdom; and by watching the wise he gets knowledge. |
| Il Giusto tien d’occhio la casa dell’empio, e precipita gli empi nelle sciagure. | The Upright One, looking on the house of the evil-doer, lets sinners be overturned to their destruction. |
| Chi chiude l’orecchio al grido del povero, griderà anch’egli, e non gli sarà risposto. | He whose ears are stopped at the cry of the poor, will himself get no answer to his cry for help. |
| Un dono fatto in segreto placa la collera, e un regalo dato di sottomano, l’ira violenta. | By a secret offering wrath is turned away, and the heat of angry feelings by money in the folds of the robe. |
| Far ciò ch’è retto è una gioia per il giusto, ma è una rovina per gli artefici d’iniquità. | It is a joy to the good man to do right, but it is destruction to the workers of evil. |
| L’uomo che erra lungi dalle vie del buon senso, riposerà nell’assemblea dei trapassati. | The wanderer from the way of knowledge will have his resting-place among the shades. |
| Chi ama godere sarà bisognoso, chi ama il vino e l’olio non arricchirà. | The lover of pleasure will be a poor man: the lover of wine and oil will not get wealth. |
| L’empio serve di riscatto al giusto; e il perfido, agli uomini retti. | The evil-doer will be given as a price for the life of the good man, and the worker of deceit in the place of the upright. |
| Meglio abitare in un deserto, che con una donna rissosa e stizzosa. | It is better to be living in a waste land, than with a bitter-tongued and angry woman. |
| In casa del savio c’è dei tesori preziosi e dell’olio, ma l’uomo stolto dà fondo a tutto. | There is a store of great value in the house of the wise, but it is wasted by the foolish man. |
| Chi ricerca la giustizia e la bontà troverà vita, giustizia e gloria. | He who goes after righteousness and mercy will get life, righteousness, and honour. |
| Il savio dà la scalata alla città dei forti, e abbatte il baluardo in cui essa confidava. | A wise man goes up into the town of the strong ones, and overcomes its strength in which they put their faith. |
| Chi custodisce la sua bocca e la sua lingua preserva l’anima sua dalle distrette. | He who keeps watch over his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from troubles. |
| Il nome del superbo insolente è: beffardo; egli fa ogni cosa con furore di superbia. | The man of pride, lifted up in soul, is named high-hearted; he is acting in an outburst of pride. |
| I desideri del pigro l’uccidono perché le sue mani rifiutano di lavorare. | The desire of the hater of work is death to him, for his hands will do no work. |
| C’è chi da mane a sera brama avidamente, ma il giusto dona senza mai rifiutare. | All the day the sinner goes after his desire: but the upright man gives freely, keeping nothing back. |
| Il sacrifizio dell’empio è cosa abominevole; quanto più se l’offre con intento malvagio! | The offering of evil-doers is disgusting: how much more when they give it with an evil purpose! |
| Il testimonio bugiardo perirà, ma l’uomo che ascolta potrà sempre parlare. | A false witness will be cut off, ... |
| L’empio fa la faccia tosta, ma l’uomo retto rende ferma la sua condotta. | The evil-doer makes his face hard, but as for the upright, he gives thought to his way. |
| Non c’è sapienza, non intelligenza, non consiglio che valga contro l’Eterno. | Wisdom and knowledge and wise suggestions are of no use against the Lord. |
| Il cavallo è pronto per il dì della battaglia, ma la vittoria appartiene all’Eterno. | The horse is made ready for the day of war, but power to overcome is from the Lord. |
