| Then Jehovah answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, | Depois disso o Senhor respondeu a Jó dum redemoinho, dizendo: |
| Who is this that darkeneth counsel By words without knowledge? | Quem é este que escurece o conselho com palavras sem conhecimento? |
| Gird up now thy loins like a man; For I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me. | Agora cinge os teus lombos, como homem; porque te perguntarei, e tu me responderás. |
| Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if thou hast understanding. | Onde estavas tu, quando eu lançava os fundamentos da terra? Faze-mo saber, se tens entendimento. |
| Who determined the measures thereof, if thou knowest? Or who stretched the line upon it? | Quem lhe fixou as medidas, se é que o sabes? ou quem a mediu com o cordel? |
| Whereupon were the foundations thereof fastened? Or who laid the corner-stone thereof, | Sobre que foram firmadas as suas bases, ou quem lhe assentou a pedra de esquina, |
| When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy? | quando juntas cantavam as estrelas da manhã, e todos os filhos de Deus bradavam de júbilo? |
| Or [who] shut up the sea with doors, When it brake forth, [as if] it had issued out of the womb; | Ou quem encerrou com portas o mar, quando este rompeu e saiu da madre; |
| When I made clouds the garment thereof, And thick darkness a swaddling-band for it, | quando eu lhe pus nuvens por vestidura, e escuridão por faixas, |
| And marked out for it my bound, And set bars and doors, | e lhe tracei limites, pondo-lhe portas e ferrolhos, |
| And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further; And here shall thy proud waves be stayed? | e lhe disse: Até aqui virás, porém não mais adiante; e aqui se quebrarão as tuas ondas orgulhosas? |
| Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days [began], [And] caused the dayspring to know its place; | Desde que começaram os teus dias, deste tu ordem à madrugada, ou mostraste à alva o seu lugar, |
| That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, And the wicked be shaken out of it? | para que agarrasse nas extremidades da terra, e os ímpios fossem sacudidos dela? |
| It is changed as clay under the seal; And [all things] stand forth as a garment: | A terra se transforma como o barro sob o selo; e todas as coisas se assinalam como as cores dum vestido. |
| And from the wicked their light is withholden, And the high arm is broken. | E dos ímpios é retirada a sua luz, e o braço altivo se quebranta. |
| Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? Or hast thou walked in the recesses of the deep? | Acaso tu entraste até os mananciais do mar, ou passeaste pelos recessos do abismo? |
| Have the gates of death been revealed unto thee? Or hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death? | Ou foram-te descobertas as portas da morte, ou viste as portas da sombra da morte? |
| Hast thou comprehended the earth in its breadth? Declare, if thou knowest it all. | Compreendeste a largura da terra? Faze-mo saber, se sabes tudo isso. |
| Where is the way to the dwelling of light? And as for darkness, where is the place thereof, | Onde está o caminho para a morada da luz? E, quanto às trevas, onde está o seu lugar, |
| That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, And that thou shouldest discern the paths to the house thereof? | para que às tragas aos seus limites, e para que saibas as veredas para a sua casa? |
| [Doubtless], thou knowest, for thou wast then born, And the number of thy days is great! | De certo tu o sabes, porque já então eras nascido, e porque é grande o número dos teus dias! |
| Hast thou entered the treasuries of the snow, Or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail, | Acaso entraste nos tesouros da neve, e viste os tesouros da saraiva, |
| Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, Against the day of battle and war? | que eu tenho reservado para o tempo da angústia, para o dia da peleja e da guerra? |
| By what way is the light parted, Or the east wind scattered upon the earth? | Onde está o caminho para o lugar em que se reparte a luz, e se espalha o vento oriental sobre a terra? |
| Who hath cleft a channel for the waterflood, Or the way for the lightning of the thunder; | Quem abriu canais para o aguaceiro, e um caminho para o relâmpago do trovão; |
| To cause it to rain on a land where no man is; On the wilderness, wherein there is no man; | para fazer cair chuva numa terra, onde não há ninguém, e no deserto, em que não há gente; |
| To satisfy the waste and desolate [ground], And to cause the tender grass to spring forth? | para fartar a terra deserta e assolada, e para fazer crescer a tenra relva? |
| Hath the rain a father? Or who hath begotten the drops of dew? | A chuva porventura tem pai? Ou quem gerou as gotas do orvalho? |
| Out of whose womb came the ice? And the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it? | Do ventre de quem saiu o gelo? E quem gerou a geada do céu? |
| The waters hide themselves [and become] like stone, And the face of the deep is frozen. | Como pedra as águas se endurecem, e a superfície do abismo se congela. |
| Canst thou bind the cluster of the Pleiades, Or loose the bands of Orion? | Podes atar as cadeias das Plêiades, ou soltar os atilhos do Oriom? |
| Canst thou lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season? Or canst thou guide the Bear with her train? | Ou fazer sair as constelações a seu tempo, e guiar a ursa com seus filhos? |
| Knowest thou the ordinances of the heavens? Canst thou establish the dominion thereof in the earth? | Sabes tu as ordenanças dos céus, ou podes estabelecer o seu domínio sobre a terra? |
| Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, That abundance of waters may cover thee? | Ou podes levantar a tua voz até as nuvens, para que a abundância das águas te cubra? |
| Canst thou send forth lightnings, that they may go, And say unto thee, Here we are? | Ou ordenarás aos raios de modo que saiam? Eles te dirão: Eis-nos aqui? |
| Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who hath given understanding to the mind? | Quem pôs sabedoria nas densas nuvens, ou quem deu entendimento ao meteoro? |
| Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of heaven, | Quem numerará as nuvens pela sabedoria? Ou os odres do céu, quem os esvaziará, |
| When the dust runneth into a mass, And the clods cleave fast together? | quando se funde o pó em massa, e se pegam os torrões uns aos outros? |
| Canst thou hunt the prey for the lioness, Or satisfy the appetite of the young lions, | Podes caçar presa para a leoa, ou satisfazer a fome dos filhos dos leões, |
| When they couch in their dens, [And] abide in the covert to lie in wait? | quando se agacham nos covis, e estão à espreita nas covas? |
| Who provideth for the raven his prey, When his young ones cry unto God, [And] wander for lack of food? | Quem prepara ao corvo o seu alimento, quando os seus pintainhos clamam a Deus e andam vagueando, por não terem o que comer? |
