| My soul is weary of my life; I will give free course to my complaint; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul. | Tendo tédio à minha vida; darei livre curso à minha queixa, falarei na amargura da minha alma: |
| I will say unto God, Do not condemn me; Show me wherefore thou contendest with me. | Direi a Deus: Não me condenes; faze-me saber por que contendes comigo. |
| Is it good unto thee that thou shouldest oppress, That thou shouldest despise the work of thy hands, And shine upon the counsel of the wicked? | Tens prazer em oprimir, em desprezar a obra das tuas mãos e favorecer o desígnio dos ímpios? |
| Hast thou eyes of flesh? Or seest thou as man seeth? | Tens tu olhos de carne? Ou vês tu como vê o homem? |
| Are thy days as the days of man, Or thy years as man's days, | São os teus dias como os dias do homem? Ou são os teus anos como os anos de um homem, |
| That thou inquirest after mine iniquity, And searchest after my sin, | para te informares da minha iniqüidade, e averiguares o meu pecado, |
| Although thou knowest that I am not wicked, And there is none that can deliver out of thy hand? | ainda que tu sabes que eu não sou ímpio, e que não há ninguém que possa livrar-me da tua mão? |
| Thy hands have framed me and fashioned me Together round about; yet thou dost destroy me. | As tuas mãos me fizeram e me deram forma; e te voltas agora para me consumir? |
| Remember, I beseech thee, that thou hast fashioned me as clay; And wilt thou bring me into dust again? | Lembra-te, pois, de que do barro me formaste; e queres fazer-me tornar ao pó? |
| Hast thou not poured me out as milk, And curdled me like cheese? | Não me vazaste como leite, e não me coalhaste como queijo? |
| Thou hast clothed me with skin and flesh, And knit me together with bones and sinews. | De pele e carne me vestiste, e de ossos e nervos me teceste. |
| Thou hast granted me life and lovingkindness; And thy visitation hath preserved my spirit. | Vida e misericórdia me tens concedido, e a tua providência me tem conservado o espírito. |
| Yet these things thou didst hide in thy heart; I know that this is with thee: | Contudo ocultaste estas coisas no teu coração; bem sei que isso foi o teu desígnio. |
| If I sin, then thou markest me, And thou wilt not acquit me from mine iniquity. | Se eu pecar, tu me observas, e da minha iniqüidade não me absolverás. |
| If I be wicked, woe unto me; And if I be righteous, yet shall I not lift up my head; Being filled with ignominy, And looking upon mine affliction. | Se for ímpio, ai de mim! Se for justo, não poderei levantar a minha cabeça, estando farto de ignomínia, e de contemplar a minha miséria. |
| And if [my head] exalt itself, thou huntest me as a lion; And again thou showest thyself marvellous upon me. | Se a minha cabeça se exaltar, tu me caças como a um leão feroz; e de novo fazes maravilhas contra mim. |
| Thou renewest thy witnesses against me, And increasest thine indignation upon me: Changes and warfare are with me. | Tu renovas contra mim as tuas testemunhas, e multiplicas contra mim a tua ira; reveses e combate estão comigo. |
| Wherefore then hast thou brought me forth out of the womb? I had given up the ghost, and no eye had seen me. | Por que, pois, me tiraste da madre? Ah! se então tivera expirado, e olhos nenhuns me vissem! |
| I should have been as though I had not been; I should have been carried from the womb to the grave. | Então fora como se nunca houvera sido; e da madre teria sido levado para a sepultura. |
| Are not my days few? cease then, And let me alone, that I may take comfort a little, | Não são poucos os meus dias? Cessa, pois, e deixa-me, para que por um pouco eu tome alento; |
| Before I go whence I shall not return, [Even] to the land of darkness and of the shadow of death; | antes que me vá para o lugar de que não voltarei, para a terra da escuridão e das densas trevas, |
| The land dark as midnight, [The land] of the shadow of death, without any order, And where the light is as midnight. | terra escuríssima, como a própria escuridão, terra da sombra trevosa e do caos, e onde a própria luz é como a escuridão. |
