| Then Job answered and said, | Então Jó respondeu: |
| Hear diligently my speech; And let this be your consolations. | Ouvi atentamente as minhas palavras; seja isto a vossa consolação. |
| Suffer me, and I also will speak; And after that I have spoken, mock on. | Sofrei-me, e eu falarei; e, havendo eu falado, zombai. |
| As for me, is my complaint to man? And why should I not be impatient? | É porventura do homem que eu me queixo? Mas, ainda que assim fosse, não teria motivo de me impacientar? |
| Mark me, and be astonished, And lay your hand upon your mouth. | Olhai para mim, e pasmai, e ponde a mão sobre a boca. |
| Even when I remember I am troubled, And horror taketh hold on my flesh. | Quando me lembro disto, me perturbo, e a minha carne estremece de horror. |
| Wherefore do the wicked live, Become old, yea, wax mighty in power? | Por que razão vivem os ímpios, envelhecem, e ainda se robustecem em poder? |
| Their seed is established with them in their sight, And their offspring before their eyes. | Os seus filhos se estabelecem à vista deles, e os seus descendentes perante os seus olhos. |
| Their houses are safe from fear, Neither is the rod of God upon them. | As suas casas estão em paz, sem temor, e a vara de Deus não está sobre eles. |
| Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; Their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf. | O seu touro gera, e não falha; pare a sua vaca, e não aborta. |
| They send forth their little ones like a flock, And their children dance. | Eles fazem sair os seus pequeninos, como a um rebanho, e suas crianças andam saltando. |
| They sing to the timbrel and harp, And rejoice at the sound of the pipe. | Levantam a voz, ao som do tamboril e da harpa, e regozijam-se ao som da flauta. |
| They spend their days in prosperity, And in a moment they go down to Sheol. | Na prosperidade passam os seus dias, e num momento descem ao Seol. |
| And they say unto God, Depart from us; For we desire not the knowledge of thy ways. | Eles dizem a Deus: retira-te de nós, pois não desejamos ter conhecimento dos teus caminhos. |
| What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? And what profit should we have, if we pray unto him? | Que é o Todo-Poderoso, para que nós o sirvamos? E que nos aproveitará, se lhe fizermos orações? |
| Lo, their prosperity is not in their hand: The counsel of the wicked is far from me. | Vede, porém, que eles não têm na mão a prosperidade; esteja longe de mim o conselho dos ímpios! |
| How oft is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out? That their calamity cometh upon them? That [God] distributeth sorrows in his anger? | Quantas vezes sucede que se apague a lâmpada dos ímpios? que lhes sobrevenha a sua destruição? que Deus na sua ira lhes reparta dores? |
| That they are as stubble before the wind, And as chaff that the storm carrieth away? | que eles sejam como a palha diante do vento, e como a pragana, que o redemoinho arrebata? |
| [Ye say], God layeth up his iniquity for his children. Let him recompense it unto himself, that he may know it: | Deus, dizeis vós, reserva a iniqüidade do pai para seus filhos, mas é a ele mesmo que Deus deveria punir, para que o conheça. |
| Let his own eyes see his destruction, And let him drink of the wrath of the Almighty. | Vejam os seus próprios olhos a sua ruina, e beba ele do furor do Todo-Poderoso. |
| For what careth he for his house after him, When the number of his months is cut off? | Pois, que lhe importa a sua casa depois de morto, quando lhe for cortado o número dos seus meses? |
| Shall any teach God knowledge, Seeing he judgeth those that are high? | Acaso se ensinará ciência a Deus, a ele que julga os excelsos? |
| One dieth in his full strength, Being wholly at ease and quiet: | Um morre em plena prosperidade, inteiramente sossegado e tranqüilo; |
| His pails are full of milk, And the marrow of his bones is moistened. | com os seus baldes cheios de leite, e a medula dos seus ossos umedecida. |
| And another dieth in bitterness of soul, And never tasteth of good. | Outro, ao contrário, morre em amargura de alma, não havendo provado do bem. |
| They lie down alike in the dust, And the worm covereth them. | Juntamente jazem no pó, e os vermes os cobrem. |
| Behold, I know your thoughts, And the devices wherewith ye would wrong me. | Eis que conheço os vossos pensamentos, e os maus intentos com que me fazeis injustiça. |
| For ye say, Where is the house of the prince? And where is the tent wherein the wicked dwelt? | Pois dizeis: Onde está a casa do príncipe, e onde a tenda em que morava o ímpio? |
| Have ye not asked wayfaring men? And do ye not know their evidences, | Porventura não perguntastes aos viandantes? e não aceitais o seu testemunho, |
| That the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity? That they are led forth to the day of wrath? | de que o mau é preservado no dia da destruição, e poupado no dia do furor? |
| Who shall declare his way to his face? And who shall repay him what he hath done? | Quem acusará diante dele o seu caminho? e quem lhe dará o pago do que fez? |
| Yet shall he be borne to the grave, And men shall keep watch over the tomb. | Ele é levado para a sepultura, e vigiam-lhe o túmulo. |
| The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, And all men shall draw after him, As there were innumerable before him. | Os torrões do vale lhe são doces, e o seguirão todos os homens, como ele o fez aos inumeráveis que o precederam. |
| How then comfort ye me in vain, Seeing in your answers there remaineth [only] falsehood? | Como, pois, me ofereceis consolações vãs, quando nas vossas respostas só resta falsidade? |
