| Now in the fifteenth year of the rule of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being ruler of Judaea, and Herod being king of Galilee, his brother Philip king of the country of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias king of Abilene, | Y EN el año quince del imperio de Tiberio César, siendo gobernador de Judea Poncio Pilato, y Herodes tetrarca de Galilea, y su hermano Felipe tetrarca de Iturea y de la provincia de Traconite, y Lisanias tetrarca de Abilinia, |
| When Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, the word of the Lord came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the waste land. | Siendo sumos sacerdotes Anás y Caifás, vino palabra del Señor sobre Juan, hijo de Zacarías, en el desierto. |
| And he came into all the country round about Jordan, preaching baptism as a sign of forgiveness of sin for those whose hearts were changed. | Y él vino por toda la tierra al rededor del Jordán predicando el bautismo del arrepentimiento para la remisión de pecados; |
| As it says in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, The voice of one crying in the waste land, Make ready the way of the Lord, make his roads straight. | Como está escrito en el libro de las palabras del profeta Isaías que dice: Voz del que clama en el desierto: Aparejad el camino del Señor, Haced derechas sus sendas. |
| Every valley will be lifted up, and all the mountains and hills made low, and the twisted will be made straight, and the rough ways smooth; | Todo valle se henchirá, Y bajaráse todo monte y collado; Y los caminos torcidos serán enderezados, Y los caminos ásperos allanados; |
| And all flesh will see the salvation of God. | Y verá toda carne la salvación de Dios. |
| So he said to the people who went out to him for baptism: You offspring of snakes, at whose word are you going in flight from the wrath to come? | Y decía á las gentes que salían para ser bautizadas de él: ¡Oh generación de víboras, quién os enseñó á huir de la ira que vendrá? |
| Make clear by your acts that your hearts have been changed; and do not say to yourselves, We have Abraham for our father: for I say to you that God is able from these stones to make children of Abraham. | Haced, pues, frutos dignos de arrepentimiento, y no comencéis á decir en vosotros mismos: Tenemos á Abraham por padre: porque os digo que puede Dios, aun de estas piedras, levantar hijos á Abraham. |
| And even now the axe is put to the root of the trees; and every tree which does not have good fruit will be cut down and put into the fire. | Y ya también el hacha está puesta á la raíz de los árboles: todo árbol pues que no hace buen fruto, es cortado, y echado en el fuego. |
| And the people put questions to him, saying, What have we to do? | Y las gentes le preguntaban, diciendo: ¿Pues qué haremos? |
| And he made answer and said to them, He who has two coats, let him give to him who has not even one; and he who has food, let him do the same. | Y respondiendo, les dijo: El que tiene dos túnicas, dé al que no tiene; y el que tiene qué comer, haga lo mismo. |
| Then tax-farmers came to him for baptism and said to him, Master, what have we to do? | Y vinieron también publicanos para ser bautizados, y le dijeron: Maestro, ¿qué haremos? |
| And he said to them, Do not make an attempt to get more money than the right amount. | Y él les dijo: No exijáis más de lo que os está ordenado. |
| And men of the army put questions to him, saying, And what have we to do? And he said to them, Do no violent acts to any man, and do not take anything without right, and let your payment be enough for you. | Y le preguntaron también los soldados, diciendo: Y nosotros, ¿qué haremos? Y les dice: No hagáis extorsión á nadie, ni calumniéis; y contentaos con vuestras pagas. |
| And while the people were waiting, and all men were questioning in their hearts about John, if he was the Christ or not, | Y estando el pueblo esperando, y pensando todos de Juan en sus corazones, si él fuese el Cristo, |
| John made answer, saying to them all, Truly, I give you baptism with water, but one is coming who is greater than I, whose shoes I am not good enough to undo: he will give you baptism with the Holy Spirit, and with fire: | Respondió Juan, diciendo á todos: Yo, á la verdad, os bautizo en agua; mas viene quien es más poderoso que yo, de quien no soy digno de desatar la correa de sus zapatos: él os bautizará en Espíritu Santo y fuego; |
| In whose hand is the instrument with which he will make clean his grain; he will put the good grain in his store, but the waste will be burned in the fire which will never be put out. | Cuyo bieldo está en su mano, y limpiará su era, y juntará el trigo en su alfolí, y la paja quemará en fuego que nunca se apagará. |
| And so comforting them with these and other words, he gave the good news to the people; | Y amonestando, otras muchas cosas también anunciaba al pueblo. |
| But Herod the king, because John had made a protest on account of Herodias, his brother's wife, and other evil things which Herod had done, | Entonces Herodes el tetrarca, siendo reprendido por él á causa de Herodías, mujer de Felipe su hermano, y de todas las maldades que había hecho Herodes, |
| Did this most evil thing of all, and had John shut up in prison. | Añadió también esto sobre todo, que encerró á Juan en la cárcel. |
| Now it came about that when all the people had been given baptism, Jesus, having had baptism with them, was in prayer, when, the heaven being open, | Y aconteció que, como todo el pueblo se bautizaba, también Jesús fué bautizado; y orando, el cielo se abrió, |
| The Holy Spirit came down in the form of a dove, and a voice came from heaven, saying, You are my dearly loved Son, with whom I am well pleased. | Y descendió el Espíritu Santo sobre él en forma corporal, como paloma, y fué hecha una voz del cielo que decía: Tú eres mi Hijo amado, en ti me he complacido. |
| And Jesus at this time was about thirty years old, being the son (as it seemed) of Joseph, the son of Heli, | Y el mismo Jesús comenzaba á ser como de treinta años, hijo de José, como se creía; que fué hijo de Elí, |
| The son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph, | Que fué de Mathat, que fué de Leví, que fué Melchî, que fué de Janna, que fué de José, |
| The son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai, | Que fué de Mattathías, que fué de Amós, que fué de Nahum, que fué de Esli, |
| The son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josech, the son of Joda, | Que fué de Naggai, que fué de Maat, que fué de Matthathías, que fué de Semei, que fué de José, que fué de Judá, |
| The son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri, | Que fué de Joanna, que fué de Rhesa, que fué de Zorobabel, que fué de Salathiel, |
