| Now it came about in those days that an order went out from Caesar Augustus that there was to be a numbering of all the world. | Y ACONTECIO en aquellos días que salió edicto de parte de Augusto César, que toda la tierra fuese empadronada. |
| This was the first numbering, which was made when Quirinius was ruler of Syria. | Este empadronamiento primero fué hecho siendo Cirenio gobernador de la Siria. |
| And all men went to be numbered, everyone to his town. | E iban todos para ser empadronados, cada uno á su ciudad. |
| And Joseph went up from Galilee, out of the town of Nazareth, into Judaea, to Beth-lehem, the town of David, because he was of the house and family of David, | Y subió José de Galilea, de la ciudad de Nazaret, á Judea, á la ciudad de David, que se llama Bethlehem, por cuanto era de la casa y familia de David; |
| To be put on the list with Mary, his future wife, who was about to become a mother. | Para ser empadronado con María su mujer, desposada con él, la cual estaba encinta. |
| And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. | Y aconteció que estando ellos allí, se cumplieron los días en que ella había de parir. |
| And she had her first son; and folding him in linen, she put him to rest in the place where the cattle had their food, because there was no room for them in the house. | Y parió á su hijo primogénito, y le envolvió en pañales, y acostóle en un pesebre, porque no había lugar para ellos en el mesón. |
| And in the same country there were keepers of sheep in the fields, watching over their flock by night. | Y había pastores en la misma tierra, que velaban y guardaban las vigilias de la noche sobre su ganado. |
| And an angel of the Lord came to them, and the glory of the Lord was shining round about them: and fear came on them. | Y he aquí el ángel del Señor vino sobre ellos, y la claridad de Dios los cercó de resplandor; y tuvieron gran temor. |
| And the angel said, Have no fear; for truly, I give you good news of great joy which will be for all the people: | Mas el ángel les dijo: No temáis; porque he aquí os doy nuevas de gran gozo, que será para todo el pueblo: |
| For on this day, in the town of David, a Saviour has come to birth, who is Christ the Lord. | Que os ha nacido hoy, en la ciudad de David, un Salvador, que es CRISTO el Señor. |
| And this is the sign to you: you will see a young child folded in linen, in the place where the cattle have their food. | Y esto os será por señal: hallaréis al niño envuelto en pañales, echado en un pesebre. |
| And suddenly there was with the angel a great band of spirits from heaven, giving praise to God, and saying, | Y repentinamente fué con el ángel una multitud de los ejércitos celestiales, que alababan á Dios, y decían: |
| Glory to God in the highest, and on the earth peace among men with whom he is well pleased. | Gloria en las alturas á Dios, Y en la tierra paz, buena voluntad para con los hombres. |
| And when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the keepers of the sheep said to one another, Let us go now to Beth-lehem, and see this thing which has come about, which the Lord has made clear to us. | Y aconteció que como los ángeles se fueron de ellos al cielo, los pastores dijeron los unos á los otros: Pasemos pues hasta Bethlehem, y veamos esto que ha sucedido, que el Señor nos ha manifestado. |
| And they came quickly, and saw Mary and Joseph, and the child in the place where the cattle had their food. | Y vinieron apriesa, y hallaron á María, y á José, y al niño acostado en el pesebre. |
| And when they saw it, they gave them an account of the things which had been said to them about the child. | Y viéndolo, hicieron notorio lo que les había sido dicho del niño. |
| And all those to whose ears it came were full of wonder at the things said by the keepers of the sheep. | Y todos los que oyeron, se maravillaron de lo que los pastores les decían. |
| But Mary kept all these words in her heart, and gave much thought to them. | Mas María guardaba todas estas cosas, confiriéndolas en su corazón. |
| Then the keepers of the sheep went back, giving glory and praise to God for all the things which had come to their ears and which they had seen, as it had been said to them. | Y se volvieron los pastores glorificando y alabando á Dios de todas las cosas que habían oído y visto, como les había sido dicho. |
| And when, after eight days, the time came for his circumcision, he was named Jesus, the name which the angel had given to him before his birth. | Y pasados los ocho días para circuncidar al niño, llamaron su nombre JESUS; el cual le fué puesto por el ángel antes que él fuese concebido en el vientre. |
| And when the necessary days for making them clean by the law of Moses had come to an end, they took him to Jerusalem to give him to the Lord | Y como se cumplieron los días de la purificación de ella, conforme á la ley de Moisés, le trajeron á Jerusalem para presentarle al Señor, |
| (As it says in the law of the Lord, Every mother's first male child is to be holy to the Lord), | (Como está escrito en la ley del Señor: Todo varón que abriere la matriz, será llamado santo al Señor), |
| And to make an offering, as it is ordered in the law of the Lord, of two doves or other young birds. | Y para dar la ofrenda, conforme á lo que está dicho en la ley del Señor: un par de tórtolas, ó dos palominos. |
| And there was then in Jerusalem a man whose name was Simeon; and he was an upright man, fearing God and waiting for the comfort of Israel: and the Holy Spirit was on him. | Y he aquí, había un hombre en Jerusalem, llamado Simeón, y este hombre, justo y pío, esperaba la consolación de Israel: y el Espíritu Santo era sobre él. |
| And he had knowledge, through the Holy Spirit, that he would not see death till he had seen the Lord's Christ. | Y había recibido respuesta del Espíritu Santo, que no vería la muerte antes que viese al Cristo del Señor. |
| And full of the Spirit he came into the Temple; and when the father and mother came in with the child Jesus, to do with him what was ordered by the law, | Y vino por Espíritu al templo. Y cuando metieron al niño Jesús sus padres en el templo, para hacer por él conforme á la costumbre de la ley. |
| Then he took him in his arms and gave praise to God and said, | Entonces él le tomó en sus brazos, y bendijo á Dios, y dijo: |
| Now you are letting your servant go in peace, O Lord, as you have said; | Ahora despides, Señor, á tu siervo, Conforme á tu palabra, en paz; |
| For my eyes have seen your salvation, | Porque han visto mis ojos tu salvación, |
| Which you have made ready before the face of all nations; | La cual has aparejado en presencia de todos los pueblos; |
| A light of revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel. | Luz para ser revelada á los Gentiles, Y la gloria de tu pueblo Israel. |
| And his father and mother were full of wonder at the things which were said about him. | Y José y su madre estaban maravillados de las cosas que se decían de él. |
| And Simeon gave them his blessing and said to Mary, his mother, See, this child will be the cause of the downfall and the lifting up of great numbers of people in Israel, and he will be a sign against which hard words will be said; | Y los bendijo Simeón, y dijo á su madre María: He aquí, éste es puesto para caída y para levantamiento de muchos en Israel; y para señal á la que será contradicho; |
| (And a sword will go through your heart;) so that the secret thoughts of men may come to light. | Y una espada traspasará tu alma de ti misma, para que sean manifestados los pensamientos de muchos corazones. |
| And there was one, Anna, a woman prophet, the daughter of Phanuel, of the family of Asher (she was very old, and after seven years of married life | Estaba también allí Ana, profetisa, hija de Phanuel, de la tribu de Aser; la cual había venido en grande edad, y había vivido con su marido siete años desde su virginidad; |
| She had been a widow for eighty-four years); she was in the Temple at all times, worshipping with prayers and going without food, night and day. | Y era viuda de hasta ochenta y cuatro años, que no se apartaba del templo, sirviendo de noche y de día con ayunos y oraciones. |
| And coming up at that time, she gave praise to God, talking of him to all those who were waiting for the freeing of Jerusalem. | Y ésta, sobreviniendo en la misma hora, juntamente confesaba al Señor, y hablaba de él á todos los que esperaban la redención en Jerusalem. |
| And when they had done all the things which were ordered by the law of the Lord, they went back to Galilee, to Nazareth, the town where they were living. | Mas como cumplieron todas las cosas según la ley del Señor, se volvieron á Galilea, á su ciudad de Nazaret. |
| And the child became tall and strong and full of wisdom, and the grace of God was on him. | Y el niño crecía, y fortalecíase, y se henchía de sabiduría; y la gracia de Dios era sobre él. |
| And every year his father and mother went to Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover. | E iban sus padres todos los años á Jerusalem en la fiesta de la Pascua. |
| And when he was twelve years old, they went up, as their way was, to the feast; | Y cuando fué de doce años, subieron ellos á Jerusalem conforme á la costumbre del día de la fiesta. |
| And when the days of the feast came to an end and they were going back, the boy Jesus was still in Jerusalem, but they had no knowledge of it: | Y acabados los días, volviendo ellos, se quedó el niño Jesús en Jerusalem, sin saberlo José y su madre. |
| And in the belief that he was with some of their number, they went a day's journey; and after looking for him among their relations and friends, | Y pensando que estaba en la compañía, anduvieron camino de un día; y le buscaban entre los parientes y entre los conocidos: |
| And seeing that he was not there, they went back to Jerusalem, to make search for him. | Mas como no le hallasen, volvieron á Jerusalem buscándole. |
| And after three days they came across him in the Temple, seated among the wise men, giving ear to their words and putting questions to them. | Y aconteció, que tres días después le hallaron en el templo, sentado en medio de los doctores, oyéndoles y preguntándoles. |
| And all to whose ears it came were full of wonder at his knowledge and the answers which he gave. | Y todos los que le oían, se pasmaban de su entendimiento y de sus respuestas. |
| And when they saw him they were surprised, and his mother said to him, Son, why have you done this to us? see, your father and I have been looking for you with sorrow. | Y cuando le vieron, se maravillaron; y díjole su madre: Hijo, ¿por qué nos has hecho así? He aquí, tu padre y yo te hemos buscado con dolor. |
| And he said to them, Why were you looking for me? was it not clear to you that my right place was in my Father's house? | Entonces él les dice: ¿Qué hay? ¿por qué me buscabais? ¿No sabíais que en los negocios de mi Padre me conviene estar? |
| And his words seemed strange to them. | Mas ellos no entendieron las palabras que les habló. |
| And he went down with them and came to Nazareth; and did as he was ordered: and his mother kept all these words in her heart. | Y descendió con ellos, y vino á Nazaret, y estaba sujeto á ellos. Y su madre guardaba todas estas cosas en su corazón. |
| And Jesus was increasing in wisdom and in years, and in grace before God and men. | Y Jesús crecía en sabiduría, y en edad, y en gracia para con Dios y los hombres. |
