| For this Melchizedek, the king of Salem, a priest of the Most High God, who gave Abraham his blessing, meeting him when he came back after putting the kings to death, | Poiché questo Melchisedec, re di Salem, sacerdote dell’Iddio altissimo, che andò incontro ad Abramo quand’egli tornava dalla sconfitta dei re e lo benedisse, |
| And to whom Abraham gave a tenth part of everything which he had, being first named King of righteousness, and then in addition, King of Salem, that is to say, King of peace; | a cui Abramo diede anche la decima d’ogni cosa, il quale in prima, secondo la interpretazione del suo nome, è Re di giustizia, e poi anche Re di Salem, vale a dire Re di pace, |
| Being without father or mother, or family, having no birth or end to his life, being made like the Son of God, is a priest for ever. | senza padre, senza madre, senza genealogia, senza principio di giorni né fin di vita, ma rassomigliato al Figliuol di Dio, questo Melchisedec rimane sacerdote in perpetuo. |
| Now see how great this man was, to whom our father Abraham gave a tenth part of what he had got in the fight. | Or considerate quanto grande fosse colui al quale Abramo, il patriarca, dette la decima del meglio della preda. |
| And it is true that by the law, those of the sons of Levi who have the position of priests may take a tenth part of the people's goods; that is to say, they take it from their brothers though these are the sons of Abraham. | Or quelli d’infra i figliuoli di Levi che ricevono il sacerdozio, hanno bensì ordine, secondo la legge, di prender le decime dal popolo, cioè dai loro fratelli, benché questi siano usciti dai lombi d’Abramo; |
| But this man, who was not of their family, took the tenth from Abraham, and gave a blessing to him to whom God had given his undertaking. | quello, invece, che non è della loro stirpe, prese la decima da Abramo e benedisse colui che avea le promesse! |
| But there is no doubt that the less gets his blessing from the greater. | Ora, senza contraddizione, l’inferiore è benedetto dal superiore; |
| Now at the present time, men over whom death has power take the tenth; but then it was taken by one of whom it is witnessed that he is living. | e poi, qui, quelli che prendon le decime son degli uomini mortali; ma là le prende uno di cui si attesta che vive. |
| And we may say that in Abraham, even Levi, who has a right to take the tenth part, gave it; | E, per così dire, nella persona d’Abramo, Levi stesso, che prende le decime, fu sottoposto alla decima; |
| Because he was still in his father's body when Melchizedek came to him. | perch’egli era ancora ne’ lombi di suo padre, quando Melchisedec incontrò Abramo. |
| Now if it was possible for things to be made complete through the priests of the house of Levi (for the law was given to the people in connection with them), what need was there for another priest who was of the order of Melchizedek and not of the order of Aaron? | Ora, se la perfezione fosse stata possibile per mezzo del sacerdozio levitico (perché su quello è basata la legge data al popolo), che bisogno c’era ancora che sorgesse un altro sacerdote secondo l’ordine di Melchisedec e non scelto secondo l’ordine d’Aronne? |
| Because if the priests are changed, it is necessary to make a change in the law. | Poiché, mutato il sacerdozio, avviene per necessità anche un mutamento di legge. |
| For he of whom these things are said comes of another tribe, of which no man has ever made offerings at the altar. | Difatti, colui a proposito del quale queste parole son dette, ha appartenuto a un’altra tribù, della quale nessuno s’è accostato all’altare; |
| Because it is clear that our Lord comes out of Judah, and Moses said nothing about priests from that tribe. | perché è ben noto che il nostro Signore è sorto dalla tribù di Giuda, circa la quale Mosè non disse nulla che concernesse il sacerdozio. |
| And this is even more clear if a second priest has come up who is like Melchizedek, | E la cosa è ancora vie più evidente se sorge, a somiglianza di Melchisedec, |
| That is to say, not made by a law based on the flesh, but by the power of a life without end: | un altro sacerdote che è stato fatto tale non a tenore di una legge dalle prescrizioni carnali, ma in virtù della potenza di una vita indissolubile; |
| For it has been witnessed of him, You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. | poiché gli è resa questa testimonianza: Tu sei sacerdote in eterno secondo l’ordine di Melchisedec. |
| So the law which went before is put on one side, because it was feeble and without profit. | Giacché qui v’è bensì l’abrogazione del comandamento precedente a motivo della sua debolezza e inutilità |
| (Because the law made nothing complete), and in its place there is a better hope, through which we come near to God. | (poiché la legge non ha condotto nulla a compimento); ma v’è altresì l’introduzione d’una migliore speranza, mediante la quale ci accostiamo a Dio. |
| And as this is not without the taking of an oath | E in quanto ciò non è avvenuto senza giuramento (poiché quelli sono stati fatti sacerdoti senza giuramento, |
| (For those were made priests without an oath, but this one was made a priest with an oath by him who says of him, The Lord gave his oath, which he will not take back, that you are a priest for ever); | ma egli lo è con giuramento, per opera di Colui che ha detto: Il Signore l’ha giurato e non si pentirà: tu sei sacerdote in eterno), |
| By so much is it a better agreement which we have through Jesus. | è di tanto più eccellente del primo il patto del quale Gesù è divenuto garante. |
| And it is true that there have been a great number of those priests, because death does not let them go on for ever; | Inoltre, quelli sono stati fatti sacerdoti in gran numero, perché per la morte erano impediti di durare; |
| But this priest, because his life goes on for ever, is unchanging. | ma questi, perché dimora in eterno, ha un sacerdozio che non si trasmette; |
| So that he is fully able to be the saviour of all who come to God through him, because he is ever living to make prayer to God for them. | ond’è che può anche salvar appieno quelli che per mezzo di lui si accostano a Dio, vivendo egli sempre per intercedere per loro. |
| It was right for us to have such a high priest, one who is holy and without evil, doing no wrong, having no part with sinners, and made higher than the heavens: | E infatti a noi conveniva un sacerdote come quello, santo, innocente, immacolato, separato dai peccatori ed elevato al disopra de’ cieli; |
| Who has no need to make offerings for sins every day, like those high priests, first for himself, and then for the people; because he did this once and for ever when he made an offering of himself. | il quale non ha ogni giorno bisogno, come gli altri sommi sacerdoti, d’offrir de’ sacrifici prima per i propri peccati e poi per quelli del popolo; perché questo egli ha fatto una volta per sempre, quando ha offerto se stesso. |
| The law makes high priests of men who are feeble; but the word of the oath, which was made after the law, gives that position to a Son, in whom all good is for ever complete. | La legge infatti costituisce sommi sacerdoti uomini soggetti a infermità; ma la parola del giuramento fatto dopo la legge costituisce il Figliuolo, che è stato reso perfetto per sempre. |
