| Hear ye the word which Jehovah speaketh unto you, O house of Israel: | Ascoltate la parola che l’Eterno vi rivolge, o casa d’Israele! |
| thus saith Jehovah, Learn not the way of the nations, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the nations are dismayed at them. | Così parla l’Eterno: Non imparate a camminare nella via delle nazioni, e non abbiate paura de’ segni del cielo, perché sono le nazioni quelle che ne hanno paura. |
| For the customs of the peoples are vanity; for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman with the axe. | Poiché i costumi dei popoli sono vanità; giacché si taglia un albero nella foresta e le mani dell’operaio lo lavorano con l’ascia; |
| They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. | lo si adorna d’argento e d’oro, lo si fissa con chiodi e coi martelli perché non si muova. |
| They are like a palm-tree, of turned work, and speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good. | Cotesti dèi son come pali in un orto di cocomeri, e non parlano; bisogna portarli, perché non posson camminare. Non li temete! perché non possono fare alcun male, e non è in loro potere di far del bene. |
| There is none like unto thee, O Jehovah; thou art great, and thy name is great in might. | Non v’è alcuno pari a te, o Eterno; tu sei grande, e grande in potenza è il tuo nome. |
| Who should not fear thee, O King of the nations? for to thee doth it appertain; forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their royal estate, there is none like unto thee. | Chi non ti temerebbe, o re delle nazioni? Poiché questo t’è dovuto; giacché fra tutti i savi delle nazioni e in tutti i loro regni non v’è alcuno pari a te. |
| But they are together brutish and foolish: the instruction of idols! it is but a stock. | Ma costoro tutti insieme sono stupidi e insensati; non è che una dottrina di vanità; non è altro che legno; |
| There is silver beaten into plates, which is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the artificer and of the hands of the goldsmith; blue and purple for their clothing; they are all the work of skilful men. | argento battuto in lastre portato da Tarsis, oro venuto da Ufaz, opera di scultore e di man d’orefice; son vestiti di porpora e di scarlatto, son tutti lavoro d’abili artefici. |
| But Jehovah is the true God; he is the living God, and an everlasting King: at his wrath the earth trembleth, and the nations are not able to abide his indignation. | Ma l’Eterno è il vero Dio, egli è l’Iddio vivente, e il re eterno; per l’ira sua trema la terra, e le nazioni non posson reggere dinanzi al suo sdegno. |
| Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, these shall perish from the earth, and from under the heavens. | Così direte loro: "Gli dèi che non han fatto i cieli e la terra, scompariranno di sulla terra e di sotto il cielo". |
| He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding hath he stretched out the heavens: | Egli, con la sua potenza, ha fatto la terra; con la sua sapienza ha stabilito fermamente il mondo; con la sua intelligenza ha disteso i cieli. |
| when he uttereth his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasuries. | Quando fa udire la sua voce v’è un rumor d’acque nel cielo; ei fa salire i vapori dalle estremità della terra, fa guizzare i lampi per la pioggia e trae il vento dai suoi serbatoi; |
| Every man is become brutish [and is] without knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his graven image; for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them. | ogni uomo allora diventa stupido, privo di conoscenza; ogni orafo ha vergogna delle sue immagini scolpite; perché le sue immagini fuse sono una menzogna, e non v’è soffio vitale in loro. |
| They are vanity, a work of delusion: in the time of their visitation they shall perish. | Sono vanità, lavoro d’inganno; nel giorno del castigo, periranno. |
| The portion of Jacob is not like these; for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance: Jehovah of hosts is his name. | A loro non somiglia Colui ch’è la parte di Giacobbe; perché Egli è quel che ha formato tutte le cose, e Israele è la tribù della sua eredità. Il suo nome è l’Eterno degli eserciti. |
| Gather up thy wares out of the land, O thou that abidest in the siege. | Raccogli da terra il tuo bagaglio, o tu che sei cinta d’assedio! |
| For thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this time, and will distress them, that they may feel [it]. | Poiché così parla l’Eterno: Ecco, questa volta io lancerò lontano gli abitanti del paese, e li stringerò da presso affinché non isfuggano. |
| Woe is me because of my hurt! my wound is grievous: but I said, Truly this is [my] grief, and I must bear it. | Guai a me a motivo della mia ferita! La mia piaga è dolorosa; ma io ho detto: "Questo è il mio male, e lo devo sopportare". |
| My tent is destroyed, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth from me, and they are not: there is none to spread my tent any more, and to set up my curtains. | Le mie tende son guaste, e tutto il mio cordame è rotto; i miei figliuoli sono andati lungi da me e non sono più; non v’è più alcuno che stenda la mia tenda, che drizzi i miei padiglioni. |
| For the shepherds are become brutish, and have not inquired of Jehovah: therefore they have not prospered, and all their flocks are scattered. | Perché i pastori sono stati stupidi, e non hanno cercato l’Eterno; perciò non hanno prosperato, e tutto il loro gregge è stato disperso. |
| The voice of tidings, behold, it cometh, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah a desolation, a dwelling-place of jackals. | Ecco, un rumore giunge, un gran tumulto arriva dal paese del settentrione, per ridurre le città di Giuda in desolazione, in un ricetto di sciacalli. |
| O Jehovah, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. | O Eterno, io so che la via dell’uomo non è in suo potere, e che non è in poter dell’uomo che cammina il dirigere i suoi passi. |
| O Jehovah, correct me, but in measure: not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing. | O Eterno, correggimi, ma con giusta misura; non nella tua ira, che tu non abbia a ridurmi a poca cosa! |
| Pour out thy wrath upon the nations that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have devoured Jacob, yea, they have devoured him and consumed him, and have laid waste his habitation. | Riversa la tua ira sulle nazioni che non ti conoscono, e sui popoli che non invocano il tuo nome; poiché hanno divorato Giacobbe; sì, lo hanno divorato, l’han consumato, han desolato la sua dimora. |
