| Now Jabin, king of Hazor, hearing of these things, sent to Jobab, king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph, | Or come Iabin, re di Hatsor, ebbe udito queste cose, mandò de’ messi a Iobab re di Madon, al re di Scimron, al re di Acsaf, |
| And to the kings on the north in the hill-country, and in the Arabah south of Chinneroth, and in the lowland, and in the highlands of Dor on the west, | ai re ch’erano al nord nella contrada montuosa, nella pianura al sud di Kinnereth, nella regione bassa, e sulle alture di Dor a ponente, |
| And to the Canaanites on the east and on the west, and to the Amorites and the Hittites and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites in the hill-country, and the Hivites under Hermon in the land of Mizpah. | ai Cananei d’oriente e di ponente, agli Amorei, agli Hittei, ai Ferezei, ai Gebusei nella contrada montuosa, agli Hivvei appiè dello Hermon nel paese di Mitspa. |
| And they went out, they and all their armies with them, a great people, in number like the sand on the seaside, with horses and war-carriages in great number. | E quelli uscirono, con tutti i loro eserciti, formando un popolo innumerevole come la rena ch’è sul lido del mare, e con cavalli e carri in grandissima quantità. |
| And all these kings came together, and put their forces in position at the waters of Merom, to make war on Israel. | Tutti questi re si riunirono e vennero ad accamparsi assieme presso le acque di Merom per combattere contro Israele. |
| And the Lord said to Joshua, Have no fear of them: for tomorrow at this time I will give them all up dead before Israel; you are to have the leg-muscles of their horses cut and their war-carriages burned with fire. | E l’Eterno disse a Giosuè: "Non li temere, perché domani, a quest’ora, io farò che saran tutti uccisi davanti a Israele; tu taglierai i garetti ai loro cavalli e darai fuoco ai loro carri". |
| So Joshua and all the men of war with him came against them suddenly at the waters of Merom, and made an attack on them. | Giosuè dunque, con tutta la sua gente di guerra, marciò all’improvviso contro di essi alle acque di Merom, e piombò loro addosso; |
| And the Lord gave them up into the hands of Israel, and they overcame them driving them back to great Zidon and to Misrephoth-maim and into the valley of Mizpeh to the east; and they put them all to death, no man got away safely. | e l’Eterno li diede nelle mani degl’Israeliti, i quali li batterono e l’inseguirono fino a Sidone la grande, fino a Misrefot-Maim e fino alla valle di Mitspa, verso oriente; li batteron così da non lasciarne scampare uno. |
| And Joshua did to them as the Lord had said to him; he had the leg-muscles of their horses cut and their war-carriages burned with fire. | E Giosuè li tratto come gli avea detto l’Eterno: tagliò i garetti ai loro cavalli e dette fuoco ai loro carri. |
| At that time, Joshua went on to take Hazor and put its king to the sword: for in earlier times Hazor was the chief of all those kingdoms. | Al suo ritorno, e in quel medesimo tempo, Giosuè prese Hatsor e ne fece perire di spada il re; poiché Hatsor era stata per l’addietro la capitale di tutti quei regni. |
| And they put every person in it to death without mercy, giving every living thing up to the curse, and burning Hazor. | Mise anche a fil di spada tutte le persone che vi si trovavano, votandole allo sterminio; non vi restò anima viva, e dette Hatsor alle fiamme. |
| And all the towns of these kings, and all the kings, Joshua took, and put them to the sword: he gave them up to the curse, as Moses, the servant of the Lord, had said. | Giosuè prese pure tutte le città di quei re e tutti i loro re, e li mise a fil di spada e li votò allo sterminio, come aveva ordinato Mosè, servo dell’Eterno. |
| As for the towns made on hills of earth, not one was burned by Israel but Hazor, which was burned by Joshua. | Ma Israele non arse alcuna delle città poste in collina, salvo Hatsor, la sola che Giosuè incendiasse. |
| And all the goods taken from these towns, and their cattle, the children of Israel kept for themselves; but every man they put to death without mercy, till their destruction was complete, and there was no one living. | E i figliuoli d’Israele si tennero per sé tutto il bottino di quelle città e il bestiame, ma misero a fil di spada tutti gli uomini fino al loro completo sterminio, senza lasciare anima viva. |
| As the Lord had given orders to Moses his servant, so Moses gave orders to Joshua, and so Joshua did; every order which the Lord had given to Moses was done. | Come l’Eterno avea comandato a Mosè suo servo, così Mosè ordinò a Giosuè, e così fece Giosuè, il quale non trascurò alcuno degli ordini che l’Eterno avea dato a Mosè. |
| So Joshua took all that land, the hill-country and all the South, and all the land of Goshen, and the lowland and the Arabah, the hill-country of Israel and its lowland; | Giosuè dunque prese tutto quel paese, la contrada montuosa, tutto il mezzogiorno, tutto il paese di Goscen, la regione bassa, la pianura, la contrada montuosa d’Israele e le sue regioni basse, |
| From Mount Halak, which goes up to Seir, as far as Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon under Mount Hermon: and all their kings he overcame and put to death. | dalla montagna brulla che s’eleva verso Seir, fino a Baal-Gad nella valle del Libano appiè del monte Hermon; prese tutti i loro re, li colpì e li mise a morte. |
| For a long time Joshua made war on all those kings. | Giosuè fece per lungo tempo guerra a tutti quei re. |
| Not one town made peace with the children of Israel, but only the Hivites of Gibeon: they took them all in war. | Non ci fu città che facesse pace coi figliuoli d’Israele, eccetto gli Hivvei che abitavano Gabaon; le presero tutte, combattendo; |
| For the Lord made them strong in heart to go to war against Israel, so that he might give them up to the curse without mercy, and that destruction might come on them, as the Lord had given orders to Moses. | perché l’Eterno facea sì che il loro cuore si ostinasse a dar battaglia ad Israele, onde Israele li votasse allo sterminio senza che ci fosse pietà per loro, e li distruggesse come l’Eterno avea comandato a Mosè. |
| And Joshua came at that time and put an end to the Anakim in the hill-country, in Hebron, in Debir, in Anab, and in all the hill-country of Judah and Israel: Joshua gave them and their towns to the curse. | In quel medesimo tempo, Giosuè si mise in marcia e sterminò gli Anakiti della contrada montuosa, di Hebron, di Debir, di Anab, di tutta la contrada montuosa di Giuda e di tutta la contrada montuosa d’Israele; Giosuè li votò allo sterminio con le loro città. |
| Not one of the Anakim was to be seen in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, some were still living. | Non rimasero più Anakiti nel paese de’ figliuoli d’Israele; non ne restarono che alcuni in Gaza, in Gath e in Asdod. |
| So Joshua took all the land, as the Lord had said to Moses; and Joshua gave it to the children of Israel as their heritage, making division of it among them by their tribes. And the land had rest from war. | Giosuè dunque prese tutto il paese, esattamente come l’Eterno avea detto a Mosè; e Giosuè lo diede in eredità a Israele, tribù per tribù, secondo la parte che toccava a ciascuna. E il paese ebbe requie dalla guerra. |
