| This is what the Lord has said: Go down to the house of the king of Judah and there give him this word, | Così parla l’Eterno: Scendi nella casa del re di Giuda, e pronunzia quivi questa parola, e di’: |
| And say, Give ear to the word of the Lord, O king of Judah, seated on the seat of David, you and your servants and your people who come in by these doors. | Ascolta la parola dell’Eterno, o re di Giuda, che siedi sul trono di Davide: tu, i tuoi servitori e il tuo popolo, che entrate per queste porte! |
| This is what the Lord has said: Do what is right, judging uprightly, and make free from the hands of the cruel one him whose goods have been violently taken away: do no wrong and be not violent to the man from a strange country and the child without a father and the widow, and let not those who have done no wrong be put to death in this place. | Così parla l’Eterno: Fate ragione e giustizia, liberate dalla mano dell’oppressore colui al quale è tolto il suo, non fate torto né violenza allo straniero, all’orfano e alla vedova, e non spargete sangue innocente, in questo luogo. |
| For if you truly do this, then there will come in through the doors of this house kings seated on the seat of David, going in carriages and on horseback, he and his servants and his people | Poiché, se metterete realmente ad effetto questa parola, dei re assisi sul trono di Davide entreranno per le porte di questa casa, montati su carri e su cavalli: essi, i loro servitori e il loro popolo. |
| But if you do not give ear to these words, I give you my oath by myself, says the Lord, that this house will become a waste. | Ma, se non date ascolto a queste parole, io giuro per me stesso, dice l’Eterno, che questa casa sarà ridotta in una rovina. |
| For this is what the Lord has said about the family of the king of Judah: You are Gilead to me, and the top of Lebanon: but, truly, I will make you waste, with towns unpeopled. | Poiché così parla l’Eterno riguardo alla casa del re di Giuda: Tu eri per me come Galaad, come la vetta del Libano. Ma, certo, io ti ridurrò simile a un deserto, a delle città disabitate. |
| And I will make ready those who will send destruction on you, everyone armed for war: by them your best cedar-trees will be cut down and put in the fire. | Preparo contro di te dei devastatori armati ciascuno delle sue armi; essi abbatteranno i cedri tuoi più belli, e li getteranno nel fuoco. |
| And nations from all sides will go past this town, and every man will say to his neighbour, Why has the Lord done such things to this great town? | Molte nazioni passeranno presso questa città, e ognuno dirà all’altro: "Perché l’Eterno ha egli fatto così a questa grande città?" |
| And they will say, Because they gave up the agreement of the Lord their God, and became worshippers and servants of other gods. | E si risponderà: "Perché hanno abbandonato il patto dell’Eterno, del loro Dio, perché si son prostrati davanti ad altri dèi, e li hanno serviti". |
| Let there be no weeping for the dead, and make no songs of grief for him: but make bitter weeping for him who has gone away, for he will never come back or see again the country of his birth. | Non piangete per il morto, non vi affliggete per lui; ma piangete, piangete per colui che se ne va, perché non tornerà più, e non vedrà più il suo paese natìo. |
| For this is what the Lord has said about Shallum, the son of Josiah, king of Judah, who became king in place of Josiah his father, who went out from this place: He will never come back there again: | Poiché così parla l’Eterno, riguardo a Shallum, figliuolo di Giosia, re di Giuda, che regnava in luogo di Giosia suo padre, e ch’è uscito da questo luogo: Egli non vi ritornerà più; |
| But death will come to him in the place where they have taken him away prisoner, and he will never see this land again. | ma morrà nel luogo dove l’hanno menato in cattività, e non vedrà più questo paese. |
| A curse is on him who is building his house by wrongdoing, and his rooms by doing what is not right; who makes use of his neighbour without payment, and gives him nothing for his work; | Guai a colui ch’edifica la sua casa senza giustizia, e le sue camere senza equità; che fa lavorare il prossimo per nulla, e non gli paga il suo salario; |
| Who says, I will make a wide house for myself, and rooms of great size, and has windows cut out, and has it roofed with cedar and painted with bright red. | e dice: "Mi edificherò una casa grande e delle camere spaziose", e vi fa eseguire delle finestre, la riveste di legno di cedro e la dipinge di rosso! |
| Are you to be a king because you make more use of cedar than your father? did not your father take food and drink and do right, judging in righteousness, and then it was well for him? | Regni tu forse perché hai la passione del cedro? Tuo padre non mangiava egli e non beveva? Ma faceva ciò ch’è retto e giusto, e tutto gli andava bene. |
| He was judge in the cause of the poor and those in need; then it was well. Was not this to have knowledge of me? says the Lord. | Egli giudicava la causa del povero e del bisognoso, e tutto gli andava bene. Questo non è egli conoscermi? dice l’Eterno. |
| But your eyes and your heart are fixed only on profit for yourself, on causing the death of him who has done no wrong, and on violent and cruel acts. | Ma tu non hai occhi né cuore che per la tua cupidigia, per spargere sangue innocente, e per fare oppressione e violenza. |
| So this is what the Lord has said about Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, king of Judah: They will make no weeping for him, saying, Ah my brother! or, Ah sister! they will make no weeping for him, saying, Ah lord! or, Ah his glory! | Perciò, così parla l’Eterno riguardo a Joiakim, figliuolo di Giosia, re di Giuda: Non se ne farà cordoglio, dicendo: "Ahimè, fratel mio, ahimè sorella!" Non se ne farà cordoglio, dicendo: "Ahimè, signore, ahimè sua maestà!" |
| They will do to him what they do to the dead body of an ass; his body will be pulled out and placed on the earth outside the doors of Jerusalem. | Sarà sepolto come si seppellisce un asino, trascinato e gettato fuori delle porte di Gerusalemme. |
| Go up to Lebanon and give a cry; let your voice be loud in Bashan, crying out from Abarim; for all your lovers have come to destruction | Sali sul Libano e grida, alza la voce in Basan, e grida dall’Abarim, perché tutti i tuoi amanti sono distrutti. |
| My word came to you in the time of your well-being; but you said, I will not give ear. This has been your way from your earliest years, you did not give attention to my voice. | Io t’ho parlato al tempo della tua prosperità, ma tu dicevi: "Io non ascolterò". Questo è stato il tuo modo di fare fin dalla tua fanciullezza; tu non hai mai dato ascolto alla mia voce. |
| All the keepers of your sheep will be food for the wind, and your lovers will be taken away prisoners: truly, then you will be shamed and unhonoured because of all your evil-doing. | Tutti i tuoi pastori saranno pastura del vento e i tuoi amanti andranno in cattività; allora sarai svergognata, confusa, per tutta la tua malvagità. |
| O you who are living in Lebanon, making your living-place in the cedars, how greatly to be pitied will you be when pains come on you, as on a woman in childbirth! | O tu che dimori sul Libano, che t’annidi fra i cedri, come farai pietà quando ti coglieranno i dolori, le doglie pari a quelle d’una donna di parto! |
| By my life, says the Lord, even if Coniah, the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, was the ring on my right hand, even from there I would have you pulled off; | Com’è vero ch’io vivo, dice l’Eterno, quand’anche Conia, figliuolo di Joiakim, re di Giuda, fosse un sigillo nella mia destra, io ti strapperei di lì. |
| And I will give you into the hands of those desiring your death, and into the hands of those whom you are fearing, even into the hands of Nebuchadrezzar, king of Babylon, and into the hands of the Chaldaeans. | Io ti darò in mano di quelli che cercan la tua vita, in mano di quelli de’ quali hai paura, in mano di Nebucadnetsar, re di Babilonia, in mano de’ Caldei. |
| I will send you out, and your mother who gave you birth, into another country not the land of your birth; and there death will come to you. | E caccerò te e tua madre che t’ha partorito, in un paese straniero dove non siete nati, e quivi morrete. |
| But to the land on which their soul's desire is fixed, they will never come back. | Ma quanto al paese al quale brameranno tornare, essi non vi torneranno. |
| Is this man Coniah a broken vessel of no value? is he a vessel in which there is no pleasure? why are they violently sent out, he and his seed, into a land which is strange to them? | Questo Conia è egli dunque un vaso spezzato, infranto? E’ egli un oggetto che non fa più alcun piacere? Perché son dunque cacciati, egli e la sua progenie, lanciati in un paese che non conoscono? |
| O earth, earth, earth, give ear to the word of the Lord! | O paese, o paese o paese, ascolta la parola dell’Eterno! |
| The Lord has said, Let this man be recorded as having no children, a man who will not do well in all his life: for no man of his seed will do well, seated on the seat of the kingdom of David and ruling again in Judah. | Così parla l’Eterno: Inscrivete quest’uomo come privo di figliuoli, come un uomo che non prospererà durante i suoi giorni; perché nessuno della sua progenie giungerà a sedersi sul trono di Davide, ed a regnare ancora su Giuda. |
