Romans 13

| Ogni persona sia sottoposta alle autorità superiori; perché non v’è autorità se non da Dio; e le autorità che esistono, sono ordinate da Dio: | Let everyone put himself under the authority of the higher powers, because there is no power which is not of God, and all powers are ordered by God. |
| talché chi resiste all’autorità, si oppone all’ordine di Dio; e quelli che vi si oppongono, si attireranno addosso una pena; | For which reason everyone who puts himself against the authority puts himself against the order of God: and those who are against it will get punishment for themselves. |
| poiché i magistrati non son di spavento alle opere buone, ma alle cattive. Vuoi tu non aver paura dell’autorità? Fa’ quel ch’è bene, e avrai lode da essa; | For rulers are not a cause of fear to the good work but to the evil. If you would have no fear of the authority, do good and you will have praise; |
| perché il magistrato è un ministro di Dio per il tuo bene; ma se fai quel ch’è male, temi, perché egli non porta la spada invano; poich’egli è un ministro di Dio, per infliggere una giusta punizione contro colui che fa il male. | For he is the servant of God to you for good. But if you do evil, have fear; for the sword is not in his hand for nothing: he is God's servant, making God's punishment come on the evil-doer. |
| Perciò è necessario star soggetti non soltanto a motivo della punizione, ma anche a motivo della coscienza. | So put yourselves under the authority, not for fear of wrath, but because you have the knowledge of what is right. |
| Poiché è anche per questa ragione che voi pagate i tributi; perché si tratta di ministri di Dio, i quali attendono del continuo a questo ufficio. | For the same reason, make payment of taxes; because the authority is God's servant, to take care of such things at all times. |
| Rendete a tutti quel che dovete loro: il tributo a chi dovete il tributo; la gabella a chi la gabella; il timore a chi il timore; l’onore a chi l’onore. | Give to all what is their right: taxes to him whose they are, payment to him whose right it is, fear to whom fear, honour to whom honour is to be given. |
| Non abbiate altro debito con alcuno se non d’amarvi gli uni gli altri; perché chi ama il prossimo ha adempiuto la legge. | Be in debt for nothing, but to have love for one another: for he who has love for his neighbour has kept all the law. |
| Infatti il non commettere adulterio, non uccidere, non rubare, non concupire e qualsiasi altro comandamento si riassumono in questa parola: Ama il prossimo tuo come te stesso. | And this, Do not be untrue in married life, Do not put to death, Do not take what is another's, Do not have desire for what is another's, and if there is any other order, it is covered by this word, Have love for your neighbour as for yourself. |
| L’amore non fa male alcuno al prossimo; l’amore, quindi, è l’adempimento della legge. | Love does no wrong to his neighbour, so love makes the law complete. |
| E questo tanto più dovete fare, conoscendo il tempo nel quale siamo; poiché è ora ormai che vi svegliate dal sonno; perché la salvezza ci è adesso più vicina di quando credemmo. | See then that the time has come for you to be awake from sleep: for now is your salvation nearer than when you first had faith. |
| La notte è avanzata, il giorno è vicino; gettiam dunque via le opere delle tenebre, e indossiamo le armi della luce. | The night is far gone, and the day is near: so let us put off the works of the dark, arming ourselves with light, |
| Camminiamo onestamente, come di giorno; non in gozzoviglie ed ebbrezze; non in lussuria e lascivie; non in contese ed invidie; | With right behaviour as in the day; not in pleasure-making and drinking, not in bad company and unclean behaviour, not in fighting and envy. |
| ma rivestitevi del Signor Gesù Cristo, e non abbiate cura della carne per soddisfarne le concupiscenze. | But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not give thought to the flesh to do its desires. |
