| Allora Bildad di Suach rispose e disse: | Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said, |
| "Fino a quando terrai tu questi discorsi e saran le parole della tua bocca come un vento impetuoso? | How long wilt thou speak these things? And [how long] shall the words of thy mouth be [like] a mighty wind? |
| Iddio perverte egli il giudizio? L’Onnipotente perverte egli la giustizia? | Doth God pervert justice? Or doth the Almighty pervert righteousness? |
| Se i tuoi figliuoli han peccato contro lui, egli li ha dati in balìa del loro misfatto; | If thy children have sinned against him, And he hath delivered them into the hand of their transgression; |
| ma tu, se ricorri a Dio e implori grazia dall’Onnipotente, | If thou wouldest seek diligently unto God, And make thy supplication to the Almighty; |
| se proprio sei puro e integro, certo egli sorgerà in tuo favore, e restaurerà la dimora della tua giustizia. | If thou wert pure and upright: Surely now he would awake for thee, And make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous. |
| Così sarà stato piccolo il tuo principio, ma la tua fine sarà grande oltre modo. | And though thy beginning was small, Yet thy latter end would greatly increase. |
| Interroga le passate generazioni, rifletti sull’esperienza de’ padri; | For inquire, I pray thee, of the former age, And apply thyself to that which their fathers have searched out: |
| giacché noi siam d’ieri e non sappiamo nulla; i nostri giorni sulla terra non son che un’ombra; | (For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, Because our days upon earth are a shadow); |
| ma quelli certo t’insegneranno, ti parleranno, e dal loro cuore trarranno discorsi. | Shall not they teach thee, and tell thee, And utter words out of their heart? |
| Può il papiro crescere ove non c’è limo? Il giunco viene egli su senz’acqua? | Can the rush grow up without mire? Can the flag grow without water? |
| Mentre son verdi ancora, e senza che li si tagli, prima di tutte l’erbe, seccano. | Whilst it is yet in its greenness, [and] not cut down, It withereth before any [other] herb. |
| Tale la sorte di tutti quei che dimenticano Dio, e la speranza dell’empio perirà. | So are the paths of all that forget God; And the hope of the godless man shall perish: |
| La sua baldanza è troncata, la sua fiducia e come una tela di ragno. | Whose confidence shall break in sunder, And whose trust is a spider's web. |
| Egli s’appoggia alla sua casa, ma essa non regge; vi s’aggrappa, ma quella non sta salda. | He shall lean upon his house, but it shall not stand: He shall hold fast thereby, but it shall not endure. |
| Egli verdeggia al sole, e i suoi rami si protendono sul suo giardino; | He is green before the sun, And his shoots go forth over his garden. |
| le sue radici s’intrecciano sul mucchio delle macerie, penetra fra le pietre della casa. | His roots are wrapped about the [stone] -heap, He beholdeth the place of stones. |
| Ma divelto che sia dal suo luogo, questo lo rinnega e gli dice: "Non ti ho mai veduto!" | If he be destroyed from his place, Then it shall deny him, [saying], I have not seen thee. |
| Ecco il gaudio che gli procura la sua condotta! E dalla polvere altri dopo lui germoglieranno. | Behold, this is the joy of his way; And out of the earth shall others spring. |
| No, Iddio non rigetta l’uomo integro, ne porge aiuto a quelli che fanno il male. | Behold, God will not cast away a perfect man, Neither will he uphold the evil-doers. |
| Egli renderà ancora il sorriso alla tua bocca, e sulle tue labbra metterà canti d’esultanza. | He will yet fill thy mouth with laughter, And thy lips with shouting. |
| Quelli che t’odiano saran coperti di vergogna, e la tenda degli empi sparirà". | They that hate thee shall be clothed with shame; And the tent of the wicked shall be no more. |
