| And now, give ear, O Jacob my servant, and Israel whom I have taken for myself: | Ed ora ascolta, o Giacobbe, mio servo, o Israele, che io ho scelto! |
| The Lord who made you, forming you in your mother's body, the Lord, your helper, says, Have no fear, O Jacob my servant, and you, Jeshurun, whom I have taken for myself. | Così parla l’Eterno che t’ha fatto, che t’ha formato fin dal seno materno, Colui che ti soccorre: Non temere, o Giacobbe mio servo, o Jeshurun ch’io ho scelto! |
| For I will send water on the land needing it, and streams on the dry earth: I will let my spirit come down on your seed, and my blessing on your offspring. | Poiché io spanderò delle acque sul suolo assetato, e dei ruscelli sulla terra arida; spanderò il mio spirito sulla tua progenie, e la mia benedizione sui tuoi rampolli; |
| And they will come up like grass in a well-watered field, like water-plants by the streams. | ed essi germoglieranno come in mezzo all’erba, come salci in riva a correnti d’acque. |
| One will say, I am the Lord's; and another will give himself the name, Jacob; another will put a mark on his hand, I am the Lord's, and another will take the name of Israel for himself. | L’uno dirà: "Io sono dell’Eterno"; l’altro si chiamerà del nome di Giacobbe, e un altro scriverà sulla sua mano: "Dell’Eterno", e si onorerà di portare il nome d’Israele. |
| The Lord, the King of Israel, even the Lord of armies who has taken up his cause, says, I am the first and the last, and there is no God but me. | Così parla l’Eterno, re d’Israele e suo redentore, l’Eterno degli eserciti: Io sono il primo e sono l’ultimo, e fuori di me non v’è Dio. |
| If there is one like me, let him come forward and say it, let him make it clear and put it in order before me: who has made clear in the past the things to come? let him make clear the future to me. | Chi, come me, proclama l’avvenire fin da quando fondai questo popolo antico? Ch’ei lo dichiari e me lo provi! Lo annunzino essi l’avvenire, e quel che avverrà! |
| Have no fear, be strong in heart; have I not made it clear to you in the past, and let you see it? and you are my witnesses. Is there any God but me, or a Rock of whom I have no knowledge? | Non vi spaventate, non temete! Non te l’ho io annunziato e dichiarato da tempo? Voi me ne siete testimoni. V’ha egli un Dio fuori di me? Non v’è altra Ròcca; io non ne conosco alcuna. |
| Those who make a pictured image are all of them as nothing, and the things of their desire will be of no profit to them: and their servants see not, and have no knowledge; so they will be put to shame. | Quelli che fabbricano immagini scolpite son tutti vanità; i loro idoli più cari non giovano a nulla; i loro propri testimoni non vedono, non capiscono nulla, perch’essi siano coperti d’onta. |
| Whoever makes a god, makes nothing but a metal image in which there is no profit. | Chi è che fabbrica un dio o fonde un’immagine perché non gli serve a nulla? |
| Truly, all those who make use of secret arts will be put to shame, and their words of power are only words of men: let them all come forward together; they will all be in fear and be put to shame. | Ecco, tutti quelli che vi lavorano saranno confusi, e gli artefici stessi non sono che uomini! Si radunino tutti, si presentino!… Saranno spaventati e coperti d’onta tutt’insieme. |
| The iron-worker is heating the metal in the fire, giving it form with his hammers, and working on it with his strong arm: then for need of food his strength gives way, and for need of water he becomes feeble. | Il fabbro lima il ferro, lo mette nel fuoco, forma l’idolo a colpi di martello, e lo lavora con braccio vigoroso; soffre perfino la fame, e la forza gli vien meno; non beve acqua, e si spossa. |
| The woodworker is measuring out the wood with his line, marking it out with his pencil: after smoothing it with his plane, and making circles on it with his instrument, he gives it the form and glory of a man, so that it may be placed in the house. | Il falegname stende la sua corda, disegna l’idolo con la matita, lo lavora con lo scalpello, lo misura col compasso, e ne fa una figura umana, una bella forma d’uomo, perché abiti in una casa. |
| He has cedars cut down for himself, he takes an oak and lets it get strong among the trees of the wood; he has an ash-tree planted, and the rain gives it growth. | Si tagliano de’ cedri, si prendono degli elci, delle querci, si fa la scelta fra gli alberi della foresta, si piantano de’ pini che la pioggia fa crescere. |
| Then it will be used to make a fire, so that a man may get warm; he has the oven heated with it and makes bread: he makes a god with it, to which he gives worship: he makes a pictured image out of it, and goes down on his face before it. | Poi tutto questo serve all’uomo per far del fuoco, ed ei ne prende per riscaldarsi, ne accende anche il forno per cuocere il pane; e ne fa pure un dio e l’adora, ne scolpisce un’immagine, dinanzi alla quale si prostra. |
| With part of it he makes a fire, and on the fire he gets meat cooked and takes a full meal: he makes himself warm, and says, Aha! I am warm, I have seen the fire: | Ne brucia la metà nel fuoco, con l’altra metà allestisce la carne, ne cuoce l’arrosto, e si sazia. Ed anche si scalda e dice: "Ah! mi riscaldo, godo di veder questa fiamma!" |
| And the rest of it he makes into a god, even his pictured image: he goes down on his face before it, giving worship to it, and making prayer to it, saying, Be my saviour; for you are my god. | E con l’avanzo si fa un dio, il suo idolo, gli si prostra davanti, l’adora, lo prega e gli dice: "Salvami, poiché tu sei il mio dio!" |
| They have no knowledge or wisdom; for he has put a veil over their eyes, so that they may not see; and on their hearts, so that they may not give attention. | Non sanno nulla, non capiscono nulla; hanno impiastrato loro gli occhi perché non veggano, e il cuore perché non comprendano. |
| And no one takes note, no one has enough knowledge or wisdom to say, I have put part of it in the fire, and made bread on it; I have had a meal of the flesh cooked with it: and am I now to make the rest of it into a false god? am I to go down on my face before a bit of wood? | Nessuno rientra in se stesso, ed ha conoscimento e intelletto per dire: "Ne ho bruciata la metà nel fuoco, sui suoi carboni ho fatto cuocere il pane, v’ho arrostito la carne che ho mangiata, e farò col resto un’abominazione? e mi prostrerò davanti ad un pezzo di legno?" |
| As for him whose food is the dust of a dead fire, he has been turned from the way by a twisted mind, so that he is unable to keep himself safe by saying, What I have here in my hand is false. | Un tal uomo si pasce di cenere, il suo cuore sedotto lo travia, sì ch’ei no può liberare l’anima sua e dire: "Questo che tengo nella mia destra non è una menzogna?" |
| Keep these things in mind, O Jacob; and you Israel, for you are my servant: I have made you; you are my servant; O Israel, I will not let you go out of my memory. | Ricordati di queste cose, o Giacobbe, o Israele, perché tu sei mio servo; io t’ho formato, tu sei il mio servo, o Israele, tu non sarai da me dimenticato. |
| I have put your evil doings out of my mind like a thick cloud, and your sins like a mist: come back to me; for I have taken up your cause. | Io ho fatto sparire le tue trasgressioni come una densa nube, e i tuoi peccati, come una nuvola; torna a me, perché io t’ho riscattato. |
| Make a song, O heavens, for the Lord has done it: give a loud cry, you deep parts of the earth: let your voices be loud in song, you mountains, and you woods with all your trees: for the Lord has taken up the cause of Jacob, and will let his glory be seen in Israel. | Cantate, o cieli, poiché l’Eterno ha operato! Giubilate, o profondità della terra! Date in grida di gioia, o montagne, o foreste con tutti gli alberi vostri! Poiché l’Eterno ha riscattato Giacobbe, e manifesta la sua gloria in Israele! |
| The Lord, who has taken up your cause, and who gave you life in your mother's body, says, I am the Lord who makes all things; stretching out the heavens by myself, and giving the earth its limits; who was with me? | Così parla l’Eterno, il tuo redentore, Colui che t’ha formato fin dal seno materno: Io sono l’Eterno, che ha fatto tutte le cose; io solo ho spiegato i cieli, ho distesala terra, senza che vi fosse alcuno meco; |
| Who makes the signs of those who give word of the future come to nothing, so that those who have knowledge of secret arts go off their heads; turning the wise men back, and making their knowledge foolish: | io rendo vani i presagi degl’impostori, e rendo insensati gl’indovini; io faccio indietreggiare i savi, e muto la loro scienza in follia; |
| Who makes the word of his servants certain, and gives effect to the purposes of his representatives; who says of Jerusalem, Her people will come back to her; and of the towns of Judah, I will give orders for their building, and will make her waste places fertile again: | io confermo la parola del mio servo, e mando ad effetto le predizioni de’ miei messaggeri; io dico di Gerusalemme: "Essa sarà abitata!" e delle città di Giuda: "Saranno riedificate" ed io ne rialzerò le rovine; |
| Who says to the deep, Be dry, and I will make your rivers dry: | io dico all’abisso: "Fatti asciutto, io prosciugherò i tuoi fiumi! |
| Who says of Cyrus, He will take care of my sheep, and will do all my pleasure: who says of Jerusalem, I will give the word for your building; and of the Temple, Your bases will be put in place. | io dico di Ciro: "Egli è il mio pastore; egli adempirà tutta la mia volontà, dicendo a Gerusalemme: "Sarai ricostruita!" e al tempio: "Sarai fondato!" |
