| Truly, my eye has seen all this, word of it has come to my ear, and I have knowledge of it. | Siehe, das alles hat mein Auge gesehen und mein Ohr gehört, und ich habe es verstanden. |
| The same things are in my mind as in yours; I am equal to you. | Was ihr wißt, das weiß ich auch; und bin nicht geringer denn ihr. |
| But I would have talk with the Ruler of all, and my desire is to have an argument with God. | Doch wollte ich gern zu dem Allmächtigen reden und wollte gern mit Gott rechten. |
| But you put a false face on things; all your attempts to put things right are of no value. | Aber ihr deutet's fälschlich und seid alle unnütze Ärzte. |
| If only you would keep quiet, it would be a sign of wisdom! | Wollte Gott, ihr schwieget, so wäret ihr weise. |
| Give ear to the argument of my mouth, and take note of the words of my lips. | Höret doch meine Verantwortung und merket auf die Sache, davon ich rede! |
| Will you say in God's name what is not right, and put false words into his mouth? | Wollt ihr Gott verteidigen mit Unrecht und für ihn List brauchen? |
| Will you have respect for God's person in this cause, and put yourselves forward as his supporters? | Wollt ihr seine Person ansehen? Wollt ihr Gott vertreten? |
| Will it be good for you to be searched out by him, or have you the thought that he may be guided into error like a man? | Wird's euch auch wohl gehen, wenn er euch richten wird? Meint ihr, daß ihr ihn täuschen werdet, wie man einen Menschen täuscht? |
| He will certainly put you right, if you have respect for persons in secret. | Er wird euch strafen, wo ihr heimlich Person ansehet. |
| Will not his glory put you in fear, so that your hearts will be overcome before him? | Wird er euch nicht erschrecken, wenn er sich wird hervortun, und wird seine Furcht nicht über euch fallen? |
| Your wise sayings are only dust, and your strong places are only earth. | Eure Denksprüche sind Aschensprüche; eure Bollwerke werden wie Lehmhaufen sein. |
| Keep quiet, and let me say what is in my mind, whatever may come to me. | Schweiget mir, daß ich rede, es komme über mich, was da will. |
| I will take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in my hand. | Was soll ich mein Fleisch mit meinen Zähnen davontragen und meine Seele in meine Hände legen? |
| Truly, he will put an end to me; I have no hope; but I will not give way in argument before him; | Siehe, er wird mich doch erwürgen, und ich habe nichts zu hoffen; doch will ich meine Wege vor ihm verantworten. |
| And that will be my salvation, for an evil-doer would not come before him, | Er wird ja mein Heil sein; denn es kommt kein Heuchler vor ihn. |
| Give ear with care to my words, and keep what I say in your minds. | Höret meine Rede, und meine Auslegung gehe ein zu euren Ohren. |
| See now, I have put my cause in order, and I am certain that I will be seen to be right. | Siehe, ich bin zum Rechtsstreit gerüstet; ich weiß, daß ich recht behalten werde. |
| Is any one able to take up the argument against me? If so, I would keep quiet and give up my breath. | Wer ist, der mit mir rechten könnte? Denn dann wollte ich schweigen und verscheiden. |
| Only two things do not do to me, then I will come before your face: | Zweierlei tue mir nur nicht, so will ich mich vor dir nicht verbergen: |
| Take your hand far away from me; and let me not be overcome by fear of you. | laß deine Hand fern von mir sein, und dein Schrecken erschrecke mich nicht! |
| Then at the sound of your voice I will give answer; or let me put forward my cause for you to give me an answer. | Dann rufe, ich will antworten, oder ich will reden, antworte du mir! |
| What is the number of my evil-doings and my sins? give me knowledge of them. | Wie viel ist meiner Missetaten und Sünden? Laß mich wissen meine Übertretung und Sünde. |
| Why is your face veiled from me, as if I was numbered among your haters? | Warum verbirgst du dein Antlitz und hältst mich für deinen Feind? |
| Will you be hard on a leaf in flight before the wind? will you make a dry stem go more quickly on its way? | Willst du wider ein fliegend Blatt so ernst sein und einen dürren Halm verfolgen? |
| For you put bitter things on record against me, and send punishment on me for the sins of my early years; | Denn du schreibst mir Betrübnis an und willst über mich bringen die Sünden meiner Jugend. |
| And you put chains on my feet, watching all my ways, and making a limit for my steps; | Du hast meinen Fuß in den Stock gelegt und hast acht auf alle meine Pfade und siehst auf die Fußtapfen meiner Füße, |
| Though a man comes to nothing like a bit of dead wood, or like a robe which has become food for the worm. | der ich doch wie Moder vergehe und wie ein Kleid, das die Motten fressen. |
