| And Job made answer and said, | Da antwortete Hiob und sprach: |
| No doubt you have knowledge, and wisdom will come to an end with you. | Ja, ihr seid die Leute, mit euch wird die Weisheit sterben! |
| But I have a mind as well as you; I am equal to you: yes, who has not knowledge of such things as these? | Ich habe so wohl ein Herz als ihr und bin nicht geringer denn ihr; und wer ist, der solches nicht wisse? |
| It seems that I am to be as one who is a cause of laughing to his neighbour, one who makes his prayer to God and is answered! the upright man who has done no wrong is to be made sport of! | Ich muß von meinem Nächsten verlacht sein, der ich Gott anrief, und er erhörte mich. Der Gerechte und Fromme muß verlacht sein |
| In the thought of him who is in comfort there is no respect for one who is in trouble; such is the fate of those whose feet are slipping. | und ist ein verachtet Lichtlein vor den Gedanken der Stolzen, steht aber, daß sie sich daran ärgern. |
| There is wealth in the tents of those who make destruction, and those by whom God is moved to wrath are safe; even those whose god is their strength. | Der Verstörer Hütten haben die Fülle, und Ruhe haben, die wider Gott toben, die ihren Gott in der Faust führen. |
| But put now a question to the beasts, and get teaching from them; or to the birds of the heaven, and they will make it clear to you; | Frage doch das Vieh, das wird dich's lehren und die Vögel unter dem Himmel, die werden dir's sagen; |
| Or to the things which go flat on the earth, and they will give you wisdom; and the fishes of the sea will give you news of it. | oder rede mit der Erde, die wird dich's lehren, und die Fische im Meer werden dir's erzählen. |
| Who does not see by all these that the hand of the Lord has done this? | Wer erkennte nicht an dem allem, daß des HERRN Hand solches gemacht hat? |
| In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all flesh of man. | daß in seiner Hand ist die Seele alles dessen, was da lebt, und der Geist des Fleisches aller Menschen? |
| Are not words tested by the ear, even as food is tasted by the mouth? | Prüft nicht das Ohr die Rede? und der Mund schmeckt die Speise? |
| Old men have wisdom, and a long life gives knowledge. | Ja, "bei den Großvätern ist die Weisheit, und der Verstand bei den Alten". |
| With him there is wisdom and strength; power and knowledge are his. | Bei ihm ist Weisheit und Gewalt, Rat und Verstand. |
| Truly, there is no building up of what is pulled down by him; when a man is shut up by him, no one may let him loose. | Siehe, wenn er zerbricht, so hilft kein Bauen; wenn er jemand einschließt, kann niemand aufmachen. |
| Truly, he keeps back the waters and they are dry; he sends them out and the earth is overturned. | Siehe, wenn er das Wasser verschließt, so wird alles dürr; und wenn er's ausläßt, so kehrt es das Land um. |
| With him are strength and wise designs; he who is guided into error, together with his guide, are in his hands; | Er ist stark und führt es aus. Sein ist, der da irrt und der da verführt. |
| He takes away the wisdom of the wise guides, and makes judges foolish; | Er führt die Klugen wie einen Raub und macht die Richter toll. |
| He undoes the chains of kings, and puts his band on them; | Er löst auf der Könige Zwang und bindet mit einem Gurt ihre Lenden. |
| He makes priests prisoners, overturning those in safe positions; | Er führt die Priester wie einen Raub und bringt zu Fall die Festen. |
| He makes the words of responsible persons without effect, and takes away the good sense of the old; | Er entzieht die Sprache den Bewährten und nimmt weg den Verstand der Alten. |
| He puts shame on chiefs, and takes away the power of the strong; | Er schüttet Verachtung auf die Fürsten und macht den Gürtel der Gewaltigen los. |
| Uncovering deep things out of the dark, and making the deep shade bright; | Er öffnet die finsteren Gründe und bringt heraus das Dunkel an das Licht. |
| Increasing nations, and sending destruction on them; making wide the lands of peoples, and then giving them up. | Er macht etliche zu großem Volk und bringt sie wieder um. Er breitet ein Volk aus und treibt es wieder weg. |
| He takes away the wisdom of the rulers of the earth, and sends them wandering in a waste where there is no way. | Er nimmt weg den Mut der Obersten des Volkes im Lande und macht sie irre auf einem Umwege, da kein Weg ist, |
| They go feeling about in the dark without light, wandering without help like those overcome with wine. | daß sie in Finsternis tappen ohne Licht; und macht sie irre wie die Trunkenen. |
