| My son, if you have made yourself responsible for your neighbour, or given your word for another, | Mon fils, si tu as cautionné ton prochain, Si tu t`es engagé pour autrui, |
| You are taken as in a net by the words of your mouth, the sayings of your lips have overcome you. | Si tu es enlacé par les paroles de ta bouche, Si tu es pris par les paroles de ta bouche, |
| Do this, my son, and make yourself free, because you have come into the power of your neighbour; go without waiting, and make a strong request to your neighbour. | Fais donc ceci, mon fils, dégage-toi, Puisque tu es tombé au pouvoir de ton prochain; Va, prosterne-toi, et fais des instances auprès de lui; |
| Give no sleep to your eyes, or rest to them; | Ne donne ni sommeil à tes yeux, Ni assoupissement à tes paupières; |
| Make yourself free, like the roe from the hand of the archer, and the bird from him who puts a net for her. | Dégage-toi comme la gazelle de la main du chasseur, Comme l`oiseau de la main de l`oiseleur. |
| Go to the ant, you hater of work; give thought to her ways and be wise: | Va vers la fourmi, paresseux; Considère ses voies, et deviens sage. |
| Having no chief, overseer, or ruler, | Elle n`a ni chef, Ni inspecteur, ni maître; |
| She gets her meat in the summer, storing up food at the time of the grain-cutting. | Elle prépare en été sa nourriture, Elle amasse pendant la moisson de quoi manger. |
| How long will you be sleeping, O hater of work? when will you get up from your sleep? | Paresseux, jusqu`à quand seras-tu couché? Quand te lèveras-tu de ton sommeil? |
| A little sleep, a little rest, a little folding of the hands in sleep: | Un peu de sommeil, un peu d`assoupissement, Un peu croiser les mains pour dormir!... |
| Then loss will come on you like an outlaw, and your need like an armed man | Et la pauvreté te surprendra, comme un rôdeur, Et la disette, comme un homme en armes. |
| A good-for-nothing man is an evil-doer; he goes on his way causing trouble with false words; | L`homme pervers, l`homme inique, Marche la fausseté dans la bouche; |
| Making signs with his eyes, rubbing with his feet, and giving news with his fingers; | Il cligne des yeux, parle du pied, Fait des signes avec les doigts; |
| His mind is ever designing evil: he lets loose violent acts. | La perversité est dans son coeur, Il médite le mal en tout temps, Il excite des querelles. |
| For this cause his downfall will be sudden; quickly he will be broken, and there will be no help for him. | Aussi sa ruine arrivera-t-elle subitement; Il sera brisé tout d`un coup, et sans remède. |
| Six things are hated by the Lord; seven things are disgusting to him: | Il y a six choses que hait l`Éternel, Et même sept qu`il a en horreur; |
| Eyes of pride, a false tongue, hands which take life without cause; | Les yeux hautains, la langue menteuse, Les mains qui répandent le sang innocent, |
| A heart full of evil designs, feet which are quick in running after sin; | Le coeur qui médite des projets iniques, Les pieds qui se hâtent de courir au mal, |
| A false witness, breathing out untrue words, and one who lets loose violent acts among brothers. | Le faux témoin qui dit des mensonges, Et celui qui excite des querelles entre frères. |
| My son, keep the rule of your father, and have in memory the teaching of your mother: | Mon fils, garde les préceptes de ton père, Et ne rejette pas l`enseignement de ta mère. |
| Keep them ever folded in your heart, and have them hanging round your neck. | Lie-les constamment sur ton coeur, Attache-les à ton cou. |
| In your walking, it will be your guide; when you are sleeping, it will keep watch over you; when you are awake, it will have talk with you. | Ils te dirigeront dans ta marche, Ils te garderont sur ta couche, Ils te parleront à ton réveil. |
| For the rule is a light, and the teaching a shining light; and the guiding words of training are the way of life. | Car le précepte est une lampe, et l`enseignement une lumière, Et les avertissements de la correction sont le chemin de la vie: |
| They will keep you from the evil woman, from the smooth tongue of the strange woman. | Ils te préserveront de la femme corrompue, De la langue doucereuse de l`étrangère. |
| Let not your heart's desire go after her fair body; let not her eyes take you prisoner. | Ne la convoite pas dans ton coeur pour sa beauté, Et ne te laisse pas séduire par ses paupières. |
| For a loose woman is looking for a cake of bread, but another man's wife goes after one's very life. | Car pour la femme prostituée on se réduit à un morceau de pain, Et la femme mariée tend un piège à la vie précieuse. |
| May a man take fire to his breast without burning his clothing? | Quelqu`un mettra-t-il du feu dans son sein, Sans que ses vêtements s`enflamment? |
| Or may one go on lighted coals, and his feet not be burned? | Quelqu`un marchera-t-il sur des charbons ardents, Sans que ses pieds soient brûlés? |
| So it is with him who goes in to his neighbour's wife; he who has anything to do with her will not go free from punishment. | Il en est de même pour celui qui va vers la femme de son prochain: Quiconque la touche ne restera pas impuni. |
| Men do not have a low opinion of a thief who takes food when he is in need of it: | On ne tient pas pour innocent le voleur qui dérobe Pour satisfaire son appétit, quand il a faim; |
| But if he is taken in the act he will have to give back seven times as much, giving up all his property which is in his house. | Si on le trouve, il fera une restitution au septuple, Il donnera tout ce qu`il a dans sa maison. |
| He who takes another man's wife is without all sense: he who does it is the cause of destruction to his soul. | Mais celui qui commet un adultère avec une femme est dépourvu de sens, Celui qui veut se perdre agit de la sorte; |
| Wounds will be his and loss of honour, and his shame may not be washed away. | Il n`aura que plaie et ignominie, Et son opprobre ne s`effacera point. |
| For bitter is the wrath of an angry husband; in the day of punishment he will have no mercy. | Car la jalousie met un homme en fureur, Et il est sans pitié au jour de la vengeance; |
| He will not take any payment; and he will not make peace with you though your money offerings are increased. | Il n`a égard à aucune rançon, Et il est inflexible, quand même tu multiplierais les dons. |
