| Ora, due giorni dopo, era la pasqua e gli azzimi; e i capi sacerdoti e gli scribi cercavano il modo di pigliar Gesù con inganno ed ucciderlo; | It was now two days before the feast of the Passover and the unleavened bread: and the chief priests and the scribes made designs how they might take him by deceit and put him to death: |
| perché dicevano: Non lo facciamo durante la festa, che talora non vi sia qualche tumulto del popolo. | But they said, Not while the feast is going on, for fear there may be trouble among the people. |
| Ed essendo egli in Betania, nella casa di Simone il lebbroso, mentre era a tavola, venne una donna che aveva un alabastro d’olio odorifero di nardo schietto, di gran prezzo; e rotto l’alabastro, glielo versò sul capo. | And while he was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, seated at table, there came a woman with a bottle of perfumed oil of great price; and when the bottle was broken she put the perfume on his head. |
| E alcuni, sdegnatisi, dicevano fra loro: Perché s’è fatta questa perdita dell’olio? | But some of them were angry among themselves, saying, For what purpose has this oil been wasted? |
| Questo olio si sarebbe potuto vendere più di trecento denari e darli ai poveri. E fremevano contro a lei. | We might have got more than three hundred pence for it, and given the money to the poor. And they said things against her among themselves. |
| Ma Gesù disse: Lasciatela stare! Perché le date noia? Ella ha fatto un’azione buona inverso me. | But Jesus said, Let her be; why are you troubling her? she has done a kind act to me. |
| Poiché i poveri li avete sempre con voi; e quando vogliate, potete far loro del bene; ma a me non mi avete sempre. | The poor you have ever with you, and whenever you have the desire you may do them good: but me you have not for ever. |
| Ella ha fatto ciò che per lei si poteva; ha anticipato d’ungere il mio corpo per la sepoltura. | She has done what she was able: she has put oil on my body to make it ready for its last resting-place. |
| E in verità io vi dico che per tutto il mondo, dovunque sarà predicato l’evangelo, anche quello che costei ha fatto sarà raccontato, in memoria di lei. | And truly I say to you, Wherever the good news goes out through all the earth, what this woman has done will be talked of in memory of her. |
| E Giuda Iscariot, uno dei dodici, andò dai capi sacerdoti per darglielo nelle mani. | And Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went away to the chief priests, so that he might give him up to them. |
| Ed essi, uditolo, si rallegrarono e promisero di dargli del denaro. Ed egli cercava il modo opportuno di tradirlo. | And hearing what he said, they were glad, and gave him their word to make him a payment of money. And he took thought how he might best give him up to them. |
| E il primo giorno degli azzimi, quando si sacrificava la pasqua, i suoi discepoli gli dissero: Dove vuoi che andiamo ad apparecchiarti da mangiar la pasqua? | And on the first day of unleavened bread, when the Passover lamb is put to death, his disciples said to him, Where are we to go and make ready for you to take the Passover meal? |
| Ed egli mandò due dei suoi discepoli, e disse loro: Andate nella città, e vi verrà incontro un uomo che porterà una brocca d’acqua; seguitelo; | And he sent two of his disciples, and said to them, Go into the town, and there will come to you a man with a vessel of water: go after him; |
| e dove sarà entrato, dite al padron di casa: Il Maestro dice: Dov’è la mia stanza da mangiarvi la pasqua coi miei discepoli? | And wherever he goes in, say to the owner of the house, The Master says, Where is my guest-room, where I may take the Passover with my disciples? |
| Ed egli vi mostrerà di sopra una gran sala ammobiliata e pronta; quivi apparecchiate per noi. | And he will take you up himself to a great room with a table and seats: there make ready for us. |
| E i discepoli andarono e giunsero nella città e trovarono come egli avea lor detto, e apparecchiarono la pasqua. | And the disciples went out and came into the town, and saw that it was as he had said: and they made ready the Passover. |
| E quando fu sera Gesù venne co’ dodici. | And when it was evening he came with the twelve. |
| E mentre erano a tavola e mangiavano, Gesù disse: In verità io vi dico che uno di voi, il quale mangia meco, mi tradirà. | And while they were seated taking food, Jesus said, Truly I say to you, One of you will be false to me, one who is taking food with me. |
| Essi cominciarono ad attristarsi e a dirgli ad uno ad uno: Sono io desso? | They were sad, and said to him one by one, Is it I? |
| Ed egli disse loro: E’ uno dei dodici, che intinge meco nel piatto. | And he said to them, It is one of the twelve, one who is putting his bread with me into the same plate. |
| Certo il Figliuol dell’uomo se ne va, com’è scritto di lui; ma guai a quell’uomo per cui il Figliuol dell’uomo è tradito! Ben sarebbe per quell’uomo di non esser nato! | The Son of man goes, even as the Writings say of him: but cursed is that man through whom the Son of man is given up! It would have been well for that man if he had never been given birth. |
| E mentre mangiavano, Gesù prese del pane; e fatta la benedizione, lo ruppe e lo diede loro e disse: Prendete, questo è il mio corpo. | And while they were taking food, he took bread, and after blessing it, he gave the broken bread to them, and said, Take it: this is my body. |
| Poi, preso il calice e rese grazie, lo diede loro, e tutti ne bevvero. | And he took a cup, and when he had given praise, he gave it to them: and they all had a drink from it. |
| E disse loro: Questo è il mio sangue, il sangue del patto, il quale è sparso per molti. | And he said to them, This is my blood of the testament, which is given for men. |
| In verità io vi dico che non berrò più del frutto della vigna fino a quel giorno che lo berrò nuovo nel regno di Dio. | Truly I say to you, I will take no more of the fruit of the vine till the day when I take it new in the kingdom of God. |
| E dopo ch’ebbero cantato l’inno, uscirono per andare al monte degli Ulivi. | And after a song of praise to God they went out to the Mountain of Olives. |
| E Gesù disse loro: Voi tutti sarete scandalizzati; perché è scritto: Io percoterò il pastore e le pecore saranno disperse. | And Jesus said to them, You will all be turned away from me: for it is in the Writings, I will put the keeper of the sheep to death, and the sheep will be put to flight. |
| Ma dopo che sarò risuscitato, vi precederò in Galilea. | But after I have come back from the dead, I will go before you into Galilee. |
| Ma Pietro gli disse: Quand’anche tutti fossero scandalizzati, io però non lo sarò. | But Peter said to him, Though the others may be turned away from you, I will not. |
| E Gesù gli disse: In verità io ti dico che tu, oggi, in questa stessa notte, avanti che il gallo abbia cantato due volte, mi rinnegherai tre volte. | And Jesus said to him, Truly, I say to you that you, today, even this night, before the cock's second cry, will say three times that you have no knowledge of me. |
| Ma egli vie più fermamente diceva: Quantunque mi convenisse morir teco non però ti rinnegherò. E lo stesso dicevano pure tutti gli altri. | But he said with passion, If I have to be put to death with you, I will not be false to you. And they all said the same. |
| Poi vennero in un podere detto Getsemani; ed egli disse ai suoi discepoli: Sedete qui finché io abbia pregato. | And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he said to his disciples, Be seated here while I say a prayer. |
| E prese seco Pietro e Giacomo e Giovanni e cominciò ad essere spaventato ed angosciato. | And he took with him Peter and James and John, and grief and great trouble came on him. |
| E disse loro: L’anima mia è oppressa da tristezza mortale; rimanete qui e vegliate. | And he said to them, My soul is very sad, even to death: be here a little time, and keep watch. |
| E andato un poco innanzi, si gettò a terra; e pregava che, se fosse possibile, quell’ora passasse oltre da lui. | And he went forward a little, and falling down on the earth, made request that, if possible, the hour might go from him. |
| E diceva: Abba, Padre! ogni cosa ti è possibile; allontana da me questo calice! Ma pure, non quello che io voglio, ma quello che tu vuoi. | And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible to you; take away this cup from me: but even so let not my pleasure, but yours be done. |
| E venne, e li trovò che dormivano, e disse a Pietro: Simone, dormi tu? non sei stato capace di vegliare un’ora sola? | And he came, and saw them sleeping, and said to Peter, Simon, are you sleeping? were you not able to keep watch one hour? |
| Vegliate e pregate, affinché non cadiate in tentazione; ben è lo spirito pronto, ma la carne è debole. | Keep watch with prayer, so that you may not be put to the test; the spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is feeble. |
| E di nuovo andò e pregò, dicendo le medesime parole. | And again he went away, and said a prayer, using the same words. |
| E tornato di nuovo, li trovò che dormivano perché gli occhi loro erano aggravati; e non sapevano che rispondergli. | And again he came and saw them sleeping, because their eyes were very tired; and they had nothing to say in answer. |
| E venne la terza volta, e disse loro: Dormite pure oramai, e riposatevi! Basta! L’ora è venuta: ecco, il Figliuol dell’uomo è dato nelle mani dei peccatori. | And he came the third time, and said to them, Go on sleeping now and take your rest: it is enough; the hour has come; see, the Son of man is given up into the hands of evil men. |
| Levatevi, andiamo; ecco, colui che mi tradisce, è vicino. | Get up, let us be going; see, he who gives me up is near. |
| E in quell’istante, mentr’egli parlava ancora, arrivò Giuda, l’uno dei dodici, e con lui una gran turba con ispade e bastoni, da parte de’ capi sacerdoti, degli scribi e degli anziani. | And straight away, while he was still talking, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great band with swords and sticks, from the chief priests and the scribes and those in authority. |
| Or colui che lo tradiva, avea dato loro un segnale, dicendo: Colui che bacerò è desso; pigliatelo e menatelo via sicuramente. | Now he who had been false to him had given them a sign, saying, The one to whom I give a kiss, that is he; take him, and get him away safely. |
| E come fu giunto, subito si accostò a lui e gli disse: Maestro! e lo baciò. | And when he had come, he went straight to him and said, Master; and gave him a kiss. |
| Allora quelli gli misero le mani addosso e lo presero; | And they put their hands on him, and took him. |
| ma uno di coloro ch’erano quivi presenti, tratta la spada, percosse il servitore del somma sacerdote, e gli spiccò l’orecchio. | But a certain one of those who were near took out his sword, and gave the servant of the high priest a blow, cutting off his ear. |
| E Gesù, rivolto a loro, disse: Voi siete usciti con ispade e bastoni come contro ad un ladrone per pigliarmi. | And Jesus said to them, Have you come out as against a thief, with swords and sticks to take me? |
| Ogni giorno ero fra voi insegnando nel tempio, e voi non mi avete preso; ma ciò è avvenuto, affinché le Scritture fossero adempiute. | I was with you every day in the Temple teaching, and you did not take me; but this is done so that the Writings may come true. |
| E tutti, lasciatolo, se ne fuggirono. | And they all went away from him in fear. |
| Ed un certo giovane lo seguiva, avvolto in un panno lino sul nudo; e lo presero; | And a certain young man went after him, with only a linen cloth about his body; and they put their hands on him; |
| ma egli, lasciando andare il panno lino, se ne fuggì ignudo. | But he got away unclothed, without the linen cloth. |
| E menarono Gesù al sommo sacerdote; e s’adunarono tutti i capi sacerdoti e gli anziani e egli scribi. | And they took Jesus away to the high priest; and there came together with him all the chief priests and those in authority and the scribes. |
| E Pietro lo avea seguito da lungi, fin dentro la corte del sommo sacerdote, ove stava a sedere con le guardie e si scaldava al fuoco. | And Peter had come after him at a distance, even into the house of the high priest; and he was seated with the captains, warming himself in the light of the fire. |
| Or i capi sacerdoti e tutto il Sinedrio cercavano qualche testimonianza contro a Gesù per farlo morire; e non ne trovavano alcuna. | Now the chief priests and all the Sanhedrin were looking for witness against Jesus so that they might put him to death; and they were unable to get any. |
| Poiché molti deponevano il falso contro a lui; ma le testimonianze non erano concordi. | For a number gave false witness against him and their witness was not in agreement. |
| Ed alcuni, levatisi, testimoniarono falsamente contro a lui, dicendo: | Then some got up and gave false witness against him, saying, |
| Noi l’abbiamo udito che diceva: Io disfarò questo tempio fatto di man d’uomo, e in tre giorni ne riedificherò un altro, che non sarà fatto di mano d’uomo. | He said in our hearing, I will put an end to this Temple which is made with hands, and in three days I will make another without hands. |
| Ma neppur così la loro testimonianza era concorde. | And even so their witness was not in agreement. |
| Allora il sommo sacerdote, levatosi in piè quivi in mezzo, domandò a Gesù: Non rispondi tu nulla? Che testimoniano costoro contro a te? | And the high priest got up in the middle of them, and said to Jesus, Do you say nothing in answer? what is it which these say against you? |
| Ma egli tacque e non rispose nulla. Daccapo il sommo sacerdote lo interrogò e gli disse: Sei tu il Cristo, il Figliuol del Benedetto? | But he kept quiet and said nothing. Again the high priest questioning him said, Are you the Christ, the son of the Holy One? |
| E Gesù disse: Sì, lo sono: e vedrete il Figliuol dell’uomo seduto alla destra della Potenza e venire sulle nuvole del cielo. | And Jesus said, I am: and you will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of power, and coming with the clouds of heaven. |
| Ed il sommo sacerdote, stracciatesi le vesti, disse: Che abbiam noi più bisogno di testimoni? | And the high priest, violently parting his robes, said, What more need have we of witnesses? |
| Voi avete udito la bestemmia. Che ve ne pare? E tutti lo condannarono come reo di morte. | His words against God have come to your ears: what is your opinion? And they all said it was right for him to be put to death. |
| Ed alcuni presero a sputargli addosso ed a velargli la faccia e a dargli dei pugni e a dirgli: Indovina, profeta! E le guardie presero a schiaffeggiarlo. | And some put shame on him and, covering his face, gave him blows and said to him, Now say what is to come: and the captains took him and gave him blows with their hands. |
| Ed essendo Pietro giù nella corte, venne una delle serve del sommo sacerdote; | And while Peter was down in the open square of the building, one of the servant-girls of the high priest came; |
| e veduto Pietro che si scaldava, lo riguardò in viso e disse: Anche tu eri con Gesù Nazareno. | And seeing Peter warming himself by the fire, she gave him a look, and said, You were with this Nazarene, even Jesus. |
| Ma egli lo negò, dicendo: Io non so, né capisco quel che tu dica. Ed uscì fuori nell’antiporto, e il gallo cantò. | But he said, I have no knowledge of him, or of what you are saying: and he went out into the doorway; and there came the cry of a cock. |
| E la serva, vedutolo, cominciò di nuovo a dire a quelli ch’eran quivi presenti: Costui è di quelli. Ma egli daccapo lo negò. | And the girl saw him, and said again to those who were near, This is one of them. |
| E di nuovo di lì a poco, quelli ch’erano quivi, dicevano a Pietro: Per certo tu sei di quelli, perché poi sei galileo. | But again he said it was not so. And after a little time, again those who were near said to Peter, Truly you are one of them; for you are a Galilaean. |
| Ma egli prese ad imprecare ed a giurare: Non conosco quell’uomo che voi dite. | But, with curses and oaths, he said, I have no knowledge of the man about whom you are talking. |
| E subito per la seconda volta, il gallo cantò. E Pietro si ricordò della parola che Gesù gli aveva detta: Avanti che il gallo abbia cantato due volte, tu mi rinnegherai tre volte. Ed a questo pensiero si mise a piangere. | And in the same minute, the cock gave a second cry. And it came to Peter's mind how Jesus had said to him, Before the cock's second cry, you will say three times that you have no knowledge of me. And at this thought he was overcome with weeping. |
