| Then the Lord said to Joshua, Have no fear and do not be troubled: take with you all the fighting-men and go up against Ai: for I have given into your hands the king of Ai and his people and his town and his land: | Y Jehova dijo á Josué: No temas, ni desmayes; toma contigo toda la gente de guerra, y levántate y sube á Hai. Mira, yo he entregado en tu mano al rey de Hai, y á su pueblo, á su ciudad, y á su tierra. |
| And you are to do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king: but their goods and their cattle you may take for yourselves: let a secret force be stationed to make a surprise attack on the town from the back. | Y harás á Hai y á su rey como hiciste á Jericó y á su rey: sólo que sus despojos y sus bestias tomaréis para vosotros. Pondrás, pues, emboscadas á la ciudad detrás de ella. |
| So Joshua and the fighting-men got ready to go up against Ai; and Joshua took thirty thousand men of war, and sent them out by night. | Y levantóse Josué, y toda la gente de guerra, para subir contra Hai: y escogió Josué treinta mil hombres fuertes, los cuales envió de noche. |
| And he gave them their orders, saying, Go and take up your position secretly at the back of the town: do not go very far away, and let all of you be ready: | Y mandóles, diciendo: Mirad, pondréis emboscada á la ciudad detrás de ella: no os alejaréis mucho de la ciudad, y estaréis todos apercibidos. |
| And I and all the people with me will come near the town, and when they come out against us as they did before, we will go in flight from them; | Y yo, y todo el pueblo que está conmigo, nos acercaremos á la ciudad; y cuando saldrán ellos contra nosotros, como hicieron antes, huiremos delante de ellos. |
| And they will come out after us, till we have got them away from the town; for they will say, They have gone in flight from us as before; so we will go in flight before them; | Y ellos saldrán tras nosotros, hasta que los arranquemos de la ciudad; porque ellos dirán: Huyen de nosotros como la primera vez. Huiremos, pues, delante de ellos. |
| Then you will get up from your secret position and take the town, for the Lord your God will give it up into your hands. | Entonces vosotros os levantaréis de la emboscada, y os echaréis sobre la ciudad; pues Jehová vuestro Dios la entregará en vuestras manos. |
| And when you have taken the town, put fire to it, as the Lord has said: see, I have given you your orders. | Y cuando la hubiereis tomado, le prenderéis fuego. Haréis conforme á la palabra de Jehová. Mirad que os lo he mandado. |
| So Joshua sent them out: and they took up a secret position between Beth-el and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua kept with the people that night. | Entonces Josué los envió; y ellos se fueron á la emboscada, y pusiéronse entre Beth-el y Hai, al occidente de Hai: y Josué se quedó aquella noche en medio del pueblo. |
| And early in the morning Joshua got up, and put the people in order, and he and the chiefs of Israel went up before the people to Ai. | Y levantándose Josué muy de mañana, revistó al pueblo, y subió él, con los ancianos de Israel, delante del pueblo contra Hai. |
| And all the fighting-men who were with him went up and came near the town, and took up a position on the north side of Ai facing the town, with a valley between him and the town. | Y toda la gente de guerra que con él estaba, subió, y acercóse, y llegaron delante de la ciudad, y asentaron el campo á la parte del norte de Hai: y el valle estaba entre él y Hai. |
| And taking about five thousand men, he put them in position for a surprise attack on the west side of Ai, between Beth-el and Ai. | Y tomó como cinco mil hombres, y púsolos en emboscada entre Beth-el y Hai, á la parte occidental de la ciudad. |
| So all the people were in their places, the army on the north side of the town and the secret force on the west; and that night Joshua went down into the valley. | Y el pueblo, todo el campo que estaba á la parte del norte de la ciudad, colocado ya cerca, y su emboscada al occidente de la ciudad, vínose Josué aquella noche al medio del valle. |
| Now when the king of Ai saw it, he got up quickly and went out to war against Israel, he and all his people, to the slope going down to the valley; but he had no idea that a secret force was waiting at the back of the town. | Lo cual como viese el rey de Hai, levantóse prestamente de mañana, y salió con la gente de la ciudad contra Israel, él y todo su pueblo, para combatir por el llano al tiempo señalado, no sabiendo que le estaba puesta emboscada á las espaldas de la ciudad. |
| Then Joshua and all Israel, acting as if they were overcome before them, went in flight by way of the waste land. | Entonces Josué y todo Israel, haciéndose vencidos, huyeron delante de ellos por el camino del desierto. |
| And all the people in Ai came together to go after them; and they went after Joshua, moving away from the town. | Y todo el pueblo que estaba en Hai se juntó para seguirlos: y siguieron á Josué, siendo así arrancados de la ciudad. |
| There was not a man in Ai and Beth-el who did not go out after Israel; and the town was open and unwatched while they went after Israel. | Y no quedó hombre en Hai y Beth-el, que no saliera tras de Israel; y por seguir á Israel dejaron la ciudad abierta. |
| And the Lord said to Joshua, Let your spear be stretched out against Ai; for I will give it into your hands. So Joshua took up his spear, stretching it out in the direction of the town. | Entonces Jehová dijo á Josué: Levanta la lanza que tienes en tu mano hacia Hai, porque yo la entregaré en tu mano. Y Josué levantó hacia la ciudad la lanza que en su mano tenía. |
| Then the secret force came quickly from their place, and running forward when they saw his hand stretched out, went into the town and took it, and put fire to it straight away. | Y levantándose prestamente de su lugar los que estaban en la emboscada, corrieron luego que él alzó su mano, y vinieron á la ciudad, y la tomaron, y apresuráronse á prenderle fuego. |
| Then the men of Ai, looking back, saw the smoke of the town going up to heaven, and were unable to go this way or that: and the people who had gone in flight to the waste land were turned back on those who were coming after them. | Y como los de la ciudad miraron atrás, observaron, y he aquí el humo de la ciudad que subía al cielo, y no tuvieron arbitrio para huir ni á una parte ni á otra: y el pueblo que iba huyendo hacia el desierto, se volvió contra los que le seguían. |
| And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the town had been taken by the surprise attack, and that the smoke of the town had gone up, turning round they overcame the men of Ai. | Josué y todo Israel, viendo que los de la emboscada habían tomado la ciudad, y que el humo de la ciudad subía, tornaron, é hirieron á los de Hai. |
| Then the other force came out of the town against them, so that they were being attacked on this side and on that: and Israel overcame them and let not one of them get away with his life. | Y los otros salieron de la ciudad á su encuentro: y así fueron encerrados en medio de Israel, los unos de la una parte, y los otros de la otra. Y los hirieron hasta que no quedó ninguno de ellos que escapase. |
| But the king of Ai they made prisoner, and took him to Joshua. | Y tomaron vivo al rey de Hai, y trajéronle á Josué. |
| Then, after the destruction of all the people of Ai in the field and in the waste land where they went after them, and when all the people had been put to death without mercy, all Israel went back to Ai, and put to death all who were in it without mercy. | Y cuando los Israelitas acabaron de matar á todos los moradores de Hai en el campo, en el desierto, donde ellos los habían perseguido, y que todos habían caído á filo de espada hasta ser consumidos, todos los Israelitas se tornaron á Hai, y también la pusieron á cuchillo. |
| On that day twelve thousand were put to death, men and women, all the people of Ai. | Y el número de los que cayeron aquel día, hombres y mujeres, fué doce mil, todos los de Hai. |
| For Joshua did not take back his hand with the outstretched spear till the destruction of the people of Ai was complete. | Y Josué no retrajo su mano que había extendido con la lanza, hasta que hubo destruído á todos los moradores de Hai. |
| But the cattle and the goods from that town, Israel took for themselves, as the Lord had given orders to Joshua. | Empero los Israelitas tomaron para sí las bestias y los despojos de la ciudad, conforme á la palabra de Jehová que él había mandado á Josué. |
| So Joshua gave Ai to the flames, and made it a waste mass of stones for ever, as it is to this day. | Y Josué quemó á Hai y redújola á un montón perpetuo, asolado hasta hoy. |
| And he put the king of Ai to death, hanging him on a tree till evening: and when the sun went down, Joshua gave them orders to take his body down from the tree, and put it in the public place of the town, covering it with a great mass of stones, which is there to this day. | Mas al rey de Hai colgó de un madero hasta la tarde: y como el sol se puso, mandó Josué que quitasen del madero su cuerpo, y lo echasen á la puerta de la ciudad: y levantaron sobre él un gran montón de piedras, hasta hoy. |
| Then Joshua put up an altar to the Lord, the God of Israel, in Mount Ebal, | Entonces Josué edificó un altar á Jehová Dios de Israel en el monte de Ebal, |
| In the way ordered by Moses, the servant of the Lord, as it is recorded in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of uncut stones, untouched by any iron instrument: and on it they made burned offerings and peace-offerings to the Lord. | Como Moisés, siervo de Jehová, lo había mandado á los hijos de Israel, como está escrito en el libro de la ley de Moisés, un altar de piedras enteras sobre las cuales nadie alzó hierro: y ofrecieron sobre él holocaustos á Jehová, y sacrificaron víctimas pacíficas. |
| And he made there on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, writing it before the eyes of the children of Israel. | También escribió allí en piedras la repetición de la ley de Moisés, la cual él había escrito delante de los hijos de Israel. |
| And all Israel, those who were Israelites by birth, as well as the men from other lands living with them, and their responsible men and their overseers and judges, took their places round the ark, in front of the priests, the Levites, whose work it was to take up the ark of the Lord's agreement; half of them were stationed in front of Mount Gerizim and half in front of Mount Ebal, in agreement with the orders for the blessing of the children of Israel which Moses, the servant of the Lord, had given. | Y todo Israel, y sus ancianos, oficiales, y jueces, estaban de la una y de la otra parte junto al arca, delante de los sacerdotes Levitas que llevan el arca del pacto de Jehová; así extranjeros como naturales, la mitad de ellos estaba hacia el monte de Gerizim, y la otra mitad hacia el monte de Ebal; de la manera que Moisés, siervo de Jehová, lo había mandado antes, para que bendijesen primeramente al pueblo de Israel. |
| And after, he gave them all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, as it is all recorded in the book of the law; | Después de esto, leyó todas las palabras de la ley, las bendiciones y las maldiciones, conforme á todo lo que está escrito en el libro de la ley. |
| Reading to all the meeting of Israel, with the women and the children and the men from other lands who were living among them, every word of the orders which Moses had given. | No hubo palabra alguna de todas las cosas que mandó Moisés, que Josué no hiciese leer delante de toda la congregación de Israel, mujeres y niños, y extranjeros que andaban entre ellos. |
