| And when we were safe, we made the discovery that the island was named Melita. | Y CUANDO escapamos, entonces supimos que la isla se llamaba Melita. |
| And the simple people living there were uncommonly kind to us, for they made a fire for us, and took us in, because it was raining and cold. | Y los bárbaros nos mostraron no poca humanidad; porque, encendido un fuego, nos recibieron á todos, á causa de la lluvia que venía, y del frío. |
| But when Paul had got some sticks together and put them on the fire, a snake came out, because of the heat, and gave him a bite on the hand. | Entonces habiendo Pablo recogido algunos sarmientos, y puéstolos en el fuego, una víbora, huyendo del calor, le acometió á la mano. |
| And when the people saw it hanging on his hand, they said to one another, Without doubt this man has put someone to death, and though he has got safely away from the sea, God will not let him go on living. | Y como los bárbaros vieron la víbora colgando de su mano, decían los unos á los otros: Ciertamente este hombre es homicida, á quien, escapado de la mar, la justicia no deja vivir. |
| But shaking off the beast into the fire, he got no damage. | Mas él, sacudiendo la víbora en el fuego, ningún mal padeció. |
| But they had the idea that they would see him becoming ill, or suddenly falling down dead; but after waiting a long time, and seeing that no damage came to him, changing their opinion, they said he was a god. | Empero ellos estaban esperando cuándo se había de hinchar, ó caer muerto de repente; mas habiendo esperado mucho, y viendo que ningún mal le venía, mudados, decían que era un dios. |
| Now near that place there was some land, the property of the chief man of the island, who was named Publius; who very kindly took us into his house as his guests for three days. | En aquellos lugares había heredades del principal de la isla, llamado Publio, el cual nos recibió y hospedó tres días humanamente. |
| And the father of Publius was ill, with a disease of the stomach; to whom Paul went, and put his hands on him, with prayer, and made him well. | Y aconteció que el padre de Publio estaba en cama, enfermo de fiebres y de disentería: al cual Pablo entró, y después de haber orado, le puso las manos encima, y le sanó: |
| And when this took place, all the others in the island who had diseases came and were made well. | Y esto hecho, también otros que en la isla tenían enfermedades, llegaban, y eran sanados: |
| Then they gave us great honour, and, when we went away, they put into the ship whatever things we were in need of. | Los cuales también nos honraron con muchos obsequios; y cuando partimos, nos cargaron de las cosas necesarias. |
| And after three months we went to sea in a ship of Alexandria sailing under the sign of the Dioscuri, which had been at the island for the winter. | Así que, pasados tres meses, navegamos en una nave Alejandrina que había invernado en la isla, la cual tenía por enseña á Cástor y Pólux. |
| And going into the harbour at Syracuse, we were waiting there for three days. | Y llegados á Siracusa, estuvimos allí tres días. |
| And from there, going about in a curve, we came to Rhegium: and after one day a south wind came up and on the day after we came to Puteoli: | De allí, costeando alrededor, vinimos á Regio; y otro día después, soplando el austro, vinimos al segundo día á Puteolos: |
| Where we came across some of the brothers, who kept us with them for seven days; and so we came to Rome. | Donde habiendo hallado hermanos, nos rogaron que quedásemos con ellos siete días; y luego vinimos á Roma; |
| And the brothers, when they had news of us, came out from town as far as Appii Forum and the Three Taverns to have a meeting with us: and Paul, seeing them, gave praise to God and took heart. | De donde, oyendo de nosotros los hermanos, nos salieron á recibir hasta la plaza de Appio, y Las Tres Tabernas: á los cuales como Pablo vió, dió gracias á Dios, y tomó aliento. |
| And when we came into Rome, they let Paul have a house for himself and the armed man who kept watch over him. | Y como llegamos á Roma, el centurión entregó los presos al prefecto de los ejércitos, mas á Pablo fué permitido estar por sí, con un soldado que le guardase. |
| Then after three days he sent for the chief men of the Jews: and when they had come together, he said to them, My brothers, though I had done nothing against the people or the ways of our fathers, I was given, a prisoner from Jerusalem, into the hands of the Romans. | Y aconteció que tres días después, Pablo convocó á los principales de los Judíos; á los cuales, luego que estuvieron juntos, les dijo: Yo, varones hermanos, no habiendo hecho nada contra el pueblo, ni contra los ritos de la patria, he sido entregado preso desde Jerusalem en manos de los Romanos; |
| Who, when they had put questions to me, were ready to let me go free, because there was no cause of death in me. | Los cuales, habiéndome examinado, me querían soltar; por no haber en mí ninguna causa de muerte. |
| But when the Jews made protest against it, I had to put my cause into Caesar's hands; not because I have anything to say against my nation. | Mas contradiciendo los Judíos, fuí forzado á apelar á César; no que tenga de qué acusar á mi nación. |
| But for this reason I sent for you, to see and have talk with you: for because of the hope of Israel I am in these chains. | Así que, por esta causa, os he llamado para veros y hablaros; porque por la esperanza de Israel estoy rodeado de esta cadena. |
| And they said to him, We have not had letters from Judaea about you, and no one of the brothers has come to us here to give an account or say any evil about you. | Entonces ellos le dijeron: Nosotros ni hemos recibido cartas tocante á tí de Judea, ni ha venido alguno de los hermanos que haya denunciado ó hablado algún mal de ti. |
| But we have a desire to give hearing to your opinion: for as to this form of religion, we have knowledge that in all places it is attacked. | Mas querríamos oir de ti lo que sientes; porque de esta secta notorio nos es que en todos lugares es contradicha. |
| And when a day had been fixed, they came to his house in great numbers; and he gave them teaching, giving witness to the kingdom of God, and having discussions with them about Jesus, from the law of Moses and from the prophets, from morning till evening. | Y habiéndole señalado un día, vinieron á él muchos á la posada, á los cuales declaraba y testificaba el reino de Dios, persuadiéndoles lo concerniente á Jesús, por la ley de Moisés y por los profetas, desde la mañana hasta la tarde. |
| And some were in agreement with what he said, but some had doubts. | Y algunos asentían á lo que se decía, mas algunos no creían. |
| And they went away, for there was a division among them after Paul had said this one thing: Well did the Holy Spirit say by the prophet Isaiah to your fathers, | Y como fueron entre sí discordes, se fueron, diciendo Pablo esta palabra: Bien ha hablado el Espíritu Santo por el profeta Isaías á nuestros padres, |
| Go to this people and say, Though you give ear, you will not get knowledge; and seeing, you will see, but the sense will not be clear to you: | Diciendo: Ve á este pueblo, y di les: De oído oiréis, y no entenderéis; Y viendo veréis, y no percibiréis: |
| For the heart of this people has become fat and their ears are slow in hearing and their eyes are shut; for fear that they might see with their eyes and give hearing with their ears and become wise in their hearts and be turned again to me, so that I might make them well. | Porque el corazón de este pueblo se ha engrosado, Y de los oídos oyeron pesadamente, Y sus ojos taparon; Porque no vean con los ojos, Y oigan con los oídos, Y entiendan de corazón, Y se conviertan, Y yo los sane. |
| Be certain, then, that the salvation of God is sent to the Gentiles, and they will give hearing. | Séaos pues notorio que á los Gentiles es enviada esta salud de Dios: y ellos oirán. |
| [] | Y habiendo dicho esto, los Judíos salieron, teniendo entre sí gran contienda. |
| And for the space of two years, Paul was living in the house of which he had the use, and had talk with all those who went in to see him, | Pablo empero, quedó dos años enteros en su casa de alquiler, y recibía á todos los que á él venían, |
| Preaching the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ without fear, and no orders were given that he was not to do so. | Predicando el reino de Dios y enseñando lo que es del Señor Jesucristo con toda libertad, sin impedimento. |
