| As a number of attempts have been made to put together in order an account of those events which took place among us, | Sintemal sich's viele unterwunden haben, Bericht zu geben von den Geschichten, so unter uns ergangen sind, |
| As they were handed down to us by those who saw them from the first and were preachers of the word, | wie uns das gegeben haben, die es von Anfang selbst gesehen und Diener des Worts gewesen sind: |
| It seemed good to me, having made observation, with great care, of the direction of events in their order, to put the facts in writing for you, most noble Theophilus; | habe ich's auch für gut angesehen, nachdem ich's alles von Anbeginn mit Fleiß erkundet habe, daß ich's dir, mein guter Theophilus, in Ordnung schriebe, |
| So that you might have certain knowledge of those things about which you were given teaching. | auf das du gewissen Grund erfahrest der Lehre, in welcher du unterrichtet bist. |
| In the days of Herod, king of Judaea, there was a certain priest, by name Zacharias, of the order of Abijah; and he had a wife of the family of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. | Zu der Zeit des Herodes, des Königs von Judäa, war ein Priester von der Ordnung Abia, mit Namen Zacharias, und sein Weib war von den Töchtern Aarons, welche hieß Elisabeth. |
| They were upright in the eyes of God, keeping all the rules and orders of God, and doing no wrong. | Sie waren aber alle beide fromm vor Gott und wandelten in allen Geboten und Satzungen des HERRN untadelig. |
| And they were without children, because Elisabeth had never given birth, and they were at that time very old. | Und sie hatten kein Kind; denn Elisabeth war unfruchtbar, und waren beide wohl betagt. |
| Now it came about that in his turn he was acting as priest before God, | Und es begab sich, da er des Priesteramtes pflegte vor Gott zur Zeit seiner Ordnung, |
| And as was the way of the priests, he had to go into the Temple to see to the burning of perfumes. | nach Gewohnheit des Priestertums, und an ihm war, daß er räuchern sollte, ging er in den Tempel des HERRN. |
| And all the people were offering prayers outside, at the time of the burning of perfumes. | Und die ganze Menge des Volks war draußen und betete unter der Stunde des Räucherns. |
| And he saw an angel of the Lord in his place on the right side of the altar. | Es erschien ihm aber der Engel des HERRN und stand zur rechten Hand am Räucheraltar. |
| And Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear came on him. | Und als Zacharias ihn sah, erschrak er, und es kam ihn eine Furcht an. |
| But the angel said, Have no fear, Zacharias, for your prayer has come to the ears of God, and your wife Elisabeth will have a son, and his name will be John. | Aber der Engel sprach zu ihm: Fürchte dich nicht, Zacharias! denn dein Gebet ist erhört, und dein Weib Elisabeth wird dir einen Sohn gebären, des Namen sollst du Johannes heißen. |
| And you will be glad and have great delight; and numbers of people will have joy at his birth. | Und du wirst des Freude und Wonne haben, und viele werden sich seiner Geburt freuen. |
| For he will be great in the eyes of the Lord; he will not take wine or strong drink; and he will be full of the Spirit of God from his birth. | Denn er wird groß sein vor dem HERRN; Wein und starkes Getränk wird er nicht trinken und wird noch im Mutterleibe erfüllt werden mit dem heiligen Geist. |
| And through him great numbers of the children of Israel will be turned to the Lord their God. | Und er wird der Kinder Israel viele zu Gott, ihrem HERRN, bekehren. |
| And he will go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, turning the hearts of fathers to their children, and wrongdoers to the way of righteousness; to make ready a people whose hearts have been turned to the Lord. | Und er wird vor ihm her gehen im Geist und Kraft des Elia, zu bekehren die Herzen der Väter zu den Kindern und die Ungläubigen zu der Klugheit der Gerechten, zuzurichten dem HERRN ein bereitet Volk. |
| And Zacharias said to the angel, How may I be certain of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is far on in years. | Und Zacharias sprach zu dem Engel: Wobei soll ich das erkennen? Denn ich bin alt und mein Weib ist betagt. |
| And the angel, answering, said, I am Gabriel, whose place is before God; I have been sent to say these words to you and to give you this good news. | Der Engel antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Ich bin Gabriel, der vor Gott steht, und bin gesandt, mit dir zu reden, daß ich dir solches verkündigte. |
| Now, see, you will be without voice or language till the day when these things come about, because you had not faith in my words, which will have effect at the right time. | Und siehe, du wirst verstummen und nicht reden können bis auf den Tag, da dies geschehen wird, darum daß du meinen Worten nicht geglaubt hast, welche sollen erfüllt werden zu ihrer Zeit. |
| And the people were waiting for Zacharias and were surprised because he was in the Temple for such a long time. | Und das Volk wartete auf Zacharias und verwunderte sich, daß er so lange im Tempel verzog. |
| And when he came out he was not able to say anything, and they saw that he had seen a vision in the Temple; and he was making signs to them without words. | Und da er herausging, konnte er nicht mit ihnen reden; und sie merkten, daß er ein Gesicht gesehen hatte im Tempel. Und er winkte ihnen und blieb stumm. |
| And when the days of his work in the Temple were ended, he went back to his house. | Und es begab sich, da die Zeit seines Amts aus war, ging er heim in sein Haus. |
| After that time, Elisabeth, being certain that she was to become a mother, kept herself from men's eyes for five months, saying, | Und nach den Tagen ward sein Weib Elisabeth schwanger und verbarg sich fünf Monate und sprach: |
| The Lord has done this to me, for his eyes were on me, to take away my shame in the eyes of men. | Also hat mir der HERR getan in den Tagen, da er mich angesehen hat, daß er meine Schmach unter den Menschen von mir nähme. |
| Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town in Galilee, named Nazareth, | Und im sechsten Monat ward der Engel Gabriel gesandt von Gott in eine Stadt in Galiläa, die heißt Nazareth, |
| To a virgin who was to be married to a man named Joseph, of the family of David; and the name of the virgin was Mary. | zu einer Jungfrau, die vertraut war einem Manne mit Namen Joseph, vom Hause David: und die Jungfrau hieß Maria. |
| And the angel came in to her and said, Peace be with you, to whom special grace has been given; the Lord is with you. | Und der Engel kam zu ihr hinein und sprach: Gegrüßet seist du, Holdselige! Der HERR ist mit dir, du Gebenedeite unter den Weibern! |
| But she was greatly troubled at his words, and said to herself, What may be the purpose of these words? | Da sie aber ihn sah, erschrak sie über seine Rede und gedachte: Welch ein Gruß ist das? |
| And the angel said to her, Have no fear, Mary, for you have God's approval. | Und der Engel sprach zu ihr: Fürchte dich nicht, Maria! du hast Gnade bei Gott gefunden. |
| And see, you will give birth to a son, and his name will be Jesus. | Siehe, du wirst schwanger werden und einen Sohn gebären, des Namen sollst du Jesus heißen. |
| He will be great, and will be named the Son of the Most High: and the Lord God will give him the kingdom of David, his father: | Der wird groß sein und ein Sohn des Höchsten genannt werden; und Gott der HERR wird ihm den Stuhl seines Vaters David geben; |
| He will have rule over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. | und er wird ein König sein über das Haus Jakob ewiglich, und seines Königreiches wird kein Ende sein. |
| And Mary said to the angel, How may this be, because I have had no knowledge of a man? | Da sprach Maria zu dem Engel: Wie soll das zugehen, da ich von keinem Manne weiß? |
| And the angel in answer said to her, The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will come to rest on you, and so that which will come to birth will be named holy, Son of God. | Der Engel antwortete und sprach zu ihr: Der heilige Geist wird über dich kommen, und die Kraft des Höchsten wird dich überschatten; darum wird auch das Heilige, das von dir geboren wird, Gottes Sohn genannt werden. |
| Even now Elisabeth, who is of your family, is to be a mother, though she is old: and this is the sixth month with her who was without children. | Und siehe, Elisabeth, deine Gefreunde, ist auch schwanger mit einem Sohn in ihrem Alter und geht jetzt im sechsten Monat, von der man sagt, daß sie unfruchtbar sei. |
| For there is nothing which God is not able to do. | Denn bei Gott ist kein Ding unmöglich. |
| And Mary said: I am the servant of the Lord; may it be to me as you say. And the angel went away. | Maria aber sprach: Siehe ich bin des HERRN Magd; mir geschehe, wie du gesagt hast. Und der Engel schied von ihr. |
| Then Mary got up and went quickly into the high lands, to a town of Judah; | Maria aber stand auf in den Tagen und ging auf das Gebirge eilends zu der Stadt Juda's |
| And went into the house of Zacharias and took Elisabeth in her arms. | und kam in das Haus des Zacharias und grüßte Elisabeth. |
| And when the voice of Mary came to the ears of Elisabeth, the baby made a sudden move inside her; then Elisabeth was full of the Holy Spirit, | Und es begab sich, als Elisabeth den Gruß Marias hörte, hüpfte das Kind in ihrem Leibe. Und Elisabeth ward des heiligen Geistes voll |
| And she said with a loud voice: May blessing be on you among women, and a blessing on the child of your body. | und rief laut und sprach: Gebenedeit bist du unter den Weibern, und gebenedeit ist die Frucht deines Leibes! |
| How is it that the mother of my Lord comes to me? | Und woher kommt mir das, daß die Mutter meines HERRN zu mir kommt? |
| For, truly, when the sound of your voice came to my ears, the baby in my body made a sudden move for joy. | Siehe, da ich die Stimme deines Grußes hörte, hüpfte mit Freuden das Kind in meinem Leibe. |
| Happy will she be who had faith that the things which the Lord has said to her will be done. | Und o selig bist du, die du geglaubt hast! denn es wird vollendet werden, was dir gesagt ist von dem HERRN. |
| And Mary said: My soul gives glory to God; | Und Maria sprach: Meine Seele erhebt den HERRN, |
| My spirit is glad in God my Saviour. | und mein Geist freuet sich Gottes, meines Heilands; |
| For he has had pity on his servant, though she is poor and lowly placed: and from this hour will all generations give witness to the blessing which has come to me. | denn er hat die Niedrigkeit seiner Magd angesehen. Siehe, von nun an werden mich selig preisen alle Kindeskinder; |
| For he who is strong has done great things for me; and holy is his name. | denn er hat große Dinge an mir getan, der da mächtig ist und des Name heilig ist. |
| His mercy is for all generations in whom is the fear of him. | Und seine Barmherzigkeit währet immer für und für bei denen, die ihn fürchten. |
| With his arm he has done acts of power; he has put to flight those who have pride in their hearts. | Er übet Gewalt mit seinem Arm und zerstreut, die hoffärtig sind in ihres Herzens Sinn. |
| He has put down kings from their seats, lifting up on high the men of low degree. | Er stößt die Gewaltigen vom Stuhl und erhebt die Niedrigen. |
| Those who had no food he made full of good things; the men of wealth he sent away with nothing in their hands; | Die Hungrigen füllt er mit Gütern und läßt die Reichen leer. |
| His help he has given to Israel, his servant, so that he might keep in mind his mercy to Abraham and his seed for ever, | Er denkt der Barmherzigkeit und hilft seinem Diener Israel wieder auf, |
| As he gave his word to our fathers. | wie er geredet hat unsern Vätern, Abraham und seinem Samen ewiglich. |
| And Mary was with her for about three months and then went back to her house. | Und Maria blieb bei ihr bei drei Monaten; darnach kehrte sie wiederum heim. |
| Now it was time for Elisabeth to give birth, and she had a son. | Und Elisabeth kam ihre Zeit, daß sie gebären sollte; und sie gebar einen Sohn. |
| And it came to the ears of her neighbours and relations that the Lord had been very good to her, and they took part in her joy. | Und ihre Nachbarn und Gefreunde hörten, daß der HERR große Barmherzigkeit an ihr getan hatte, und freuten sich mit ihr. |
| And on the eighth day they came to see to the circumcision of the child, and they would have given him the name of Zacharias, his father's name; | Und es begab sich am achten Tage, da kamen sie, zu beschneiden das Kindlein, und hießen ihn nach seinem Vater Zacharias. |
| But his mother made answer and said, No, his name is John. | Aber seine Mutter antwortete und sprach: Mitnichten, sondern er soll Johannes heißen. |
| And they said, Not one of your relations has that name. | Und sie sprachen zu ihr: Ist doch niemand in deiner Freundschaft, der also heiße. |
| And they made signs to his father, to say what name was to be given to him. | Und sie winkten seinem Vater, wie er ihn wollte heißen lassen. |
| And he sent for writing materials and put down: His name is John; and they were all surprised. | Und er forderte ein Täfelein und schrieb also: Er heißt Johannes. Und sie verwunderten sich alle. |
| And straight away his mouth was open and his tongue was free and he gave praise to God. | Und alsbald ward sein Mund und seine Zunge aufgetan, und er redete und lobte Gott. |
| And fear came on all those who were living round about them: and there was much talk about all these things in all the hill-country of Judaea. | Und es kam eine Furcht über alle Nachbarn; und die ganze Geschichte ward ruchbar auf dem ganzen jüdischen Gebirge. |
| And all who had word of them kept them in their minds and said, What will this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him. | Und alle, die es hörten, nahmen's zu Herzen und sprachen: Was, meinst du, will aus dem Kindlein werden? Denn die Hand des HERRN war mit ihm. |
| And his father, Zacharias, was full of the Holy Spirit, and with the voice of a prophet said these words: | Und sein Vater Zacharias ward des heiligen Geistes voll, weissagte und sprach: |
| Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has come to his people and made them free, | Gelobet sei der HERR, der Gott Israels! denn er hat besucht und erlöst sein Volk |
| Lifting up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, | und hat uns aufgerichtet ein Horn des Heils in dem Hause seines Dieners David, |
| (As he said, by the mouth of his holy prophets, from the earliest times,) | wie er vorzeiten geredet hat durch den Mund des Propheten: |
| Salvation from those who are against us, and from the hands of those who have hate for us; | daß er uns errettete von unseren Feinden und von der Hand aller, die uns hassen, |
| To do acts of mercy to our fathers and to keep in mind his holy word, | und Barmherzigkeit erzeigte unsern Vätern und gedächte an seinen heiligen Bund |
| The oath which he made to Abraham, our father, | und an den Eid, den er geschworen hat unserm Vater Abraham, uns zu geben, |
| That we, being made free from the fear of those who are against us, might give him worship, | daß wir, erlöst aus der Hand unserer Feinde, ihm dienten ohne Furcht unser Leben lang |
| In righteousness and holy living before him all our days. | in Heiligkeit und Gerechtigkeit, die ihm gefällig ist. |
| And you, child, will be named the prophet of the Most High: you will go before the face of the Lord, to make ready his ways; | Und du, Kindlein, wirst ein Prophet des Höchsten heißen. Du wirst vor dem HERRN her gehen, daß du seinen Weg bereitest |
| To give knowledge of salvation to his people, through the forgiveness of sins, | und Erkenntnis des Heils gebest seinem Volk, das da ist in Vergebung ihrer Sünden; |
| Because of the loving mercies of our God, by which the dawn from heaven has come to us, | durch die herzliche Barmherzigkeit unsers Gottes, durch welche uns besucht hat der Aufgang aus der Höhe, |
| To give light to those in dark places, and in the shade of death, so that our feet may be guided into the way of peace. | auf daß er erscheine denen, die da sitzen in Finsternis und Schatten des Todes, und richte unsere Füße auf den Weg des Friedens. |
| And the child became tall, and strong in spirit; and he was living in the waste land till the day when he came before the eyes of Israel. | Und das Kindlein wuchs und ward stark im Geist; und er war in der Wüste, bis daß er sollte hervortreten vor das Volk Israel. |
