John 8

John 8

John 8:1 ^
but Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.
John 8:1 ^
But Jesus went to the Mountain of Olives.
John 8:2 ^
And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.
John 8:2 ^
And early in the morning he came again into the Temple and all the people came to him and he was seated teaching them.
John 8:3 ^
And the scribes and the Pharisees bring a woman taken in adultery; and having set her in the midst,
John 8:3 ^
Now the scribes and Pharisees came, with a woman who had been taken in the act of sinning against the married relation;
John 8:4 ^
they say unto him, Teacher, this woman hath been taken in adultery, in the very act.
John 8:4 ^
And putting her forward, they said to him, Master, this woman has been taken in the very act of sinning against the married relation.
John 8:5 ^
Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such: what then sayest thou of her?
John 8:5 ^
Now in the law Moses gave directions that such women were to be stoned; what do you say about it?
John 8:6 ^
And this they said, trying him, that they might have [whereof] to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.
John 8:6 ^
They said this, testing him, so that they might have something against him. But Jesus, with his head bent down, made letters on the floor with his finger.
John 8:7 ^
But when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
John 8:7 ^
But when they went on with their questions, he got up and said to them, Let him among you who is without sin be the first to send a stone at her.
John 8:8 ^
And again he stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.
John 8:8 ^
And again, with bent head, he made letters on the floor.
John 8:9 ^
And they, when they heard it, went out one by one, beginning from the eldest, [even] unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the midst.
John 8:9 ^
And when his words came to their ears, they went out one by one, starting with the oldest even to the last, because they were conscious of what was in their hearts: and Jesus was there by himself with the woman before him.
John 8:10 ^
And Jesus lifted up himself, and said unto her, Woman, where are they? did no man condemn thee?
John 8:10 ^
Then Jesus got up, and seeing nobody but the woman, he said to her, Where are the men who said things against you? did no one give a decision against you?
John 8:11 ^
And she said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said, Neither do I condemn thee: go thy way; from henceforth sin no more.
John 8:11 ^
And she said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said, And I do not give a decision against you: go, and never do wrong again.]
John 8:12 ^
Again therefore Jesus spake unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.
John 8:12 ^
Then again Jesus said to them, I am the light of the world; he who comes with me will not be walking in the dark but will have the light of life.
John 8:13 ^
The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest witness of thyself; thy witness is not true.
John 8:13 ^
So the Pharisees said to him, The witness you give is about yourself: your witness is not true.
John 8:14 ^
Jesus answered and said unto them, Even if I bear witness of myself, my witness is true; for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye know not whence I come, or whither I go.
John 8:14 ^
Jesus said in answer, Even if I give witness about myself, my witness is true, because I have knowledge of where I came from and where I am going; but you have no knowledge of where I come from or of where I am going.
John 8:15 ^
Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.
John 8:15 ^
You are judging from what you see; I am judging no man.
John 8:16 ^
Yea and if I judge, my judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.
John 8:16 ^
Even if I am judging, my decision is right, because I am not by myself--with me is the Father who sent me.
John 8:17 ^
Yea and in your law it is written, that the witness of two men is true.
John 8:17 ^
Even in your law it is said that the witness of two men is true.
John 8:18 ^
I am he that beareth witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.
John 8:18 ^
I give witness about myself and the Father who sent me gives witness about me.
John 8:19 ^
They said therefore unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye know neither me, nor my Father: if ye knew me, ye would know my Father also.
John 8:19 ^
Then they said to him, Where is your Father? Jesus said in answer, You have no knowledge of me or of my Father: if you had knowledge of me you would have knowledge of my Father.
John 8:20 ^
These words spake he in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man took him; because his hour was not yet come.
John 8:20 ^
Jesus said these words in the place where the offerings were stored, while he was teaching in the Temple: but no man took him because his time was still to come.
John 8:21 ^
He said therefore again unto them, I go away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin: whither I go, ye cannot come.
John 8:21 ^
Then he said to them again, I am going away and you will be looking for me, but death will overtake you in your sins. It is not possible for you to come where I am going.
John 8:22 ^
The Jews therefore said, Will he kill himself, that he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come?
John 8:22 ^
So the Jews said, Will he take his life? Is that why he says, Where I go it is not possible for you to come?
John 8:23 ^
And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.
John 8:23 ^
And he said to them, You are of the earth; I am from heaven: you are of this world; I am not of this world.
John 8:24 ^
I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for except ye believe that I am [he], ye shall die in your sins.
John 8:24 ^
For this reason I said to you that death will overtake you in your sins: for if you have not faith that I am he, death will come to you while you are in your sins.
John 8:25 ^
They said therefore unto him, Who art thou? Jesus said unto them, Even that which I have also spoken unto you from the beginning.
John 8:25 ^
Then they said to him, Who are you? Jesus said, What I said to you from the first.
John 8:26 ^
I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you: howbeit he that sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him, these speak I unto the world.
John 8:26 ^
I have much to say about you and against you: but he who sent me is true and what he has said to me I say to the world.
John 8:27 ^
They perceived not that he spake to them of the Father.
John 8:27 ^
They did not see that his words were about the Father.
John 8:28 ^
Jesus therefore said, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am [he], and [that] I do nothing of myself, but as the Father taught me, I speak these things.
John 8:28 ^
So Jesus said, When the Son of man has been lifted up by you, then it will be clear to you who I am, and that I do nothing of myself, but say as the Father gave me teaching.
John 8:29 ^
And he that sent me is with me; he hath not left me alone; for I do always the things that are pleasing to him.
John 8:29 ^
He who sent me is with me; he has not gone from me, because at all times I do the things which are pleasing to him.
John 8:30 ^
As he spake these things, many believed on him.
John 8:30 ^
When he said this a number came to have faith in him.
John 8:31 ^
Jesus therefore said to those Jews that had believed him, If ye abide in my word, [then] are ye truly my disciples;
John 8:31 ^
Then Jesus said to the Jews who had faith in him, If you keep my word, then you are truly my disciples;
John 8:32 ^
and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
John 8:32 ^
And you will have knowledge of what is true, and that will make you free.
John 8:33 ^
They answered unto him, We are Abraham's seed, and have never yet been in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
John 8:33 ^
They said to him in answer, We are Abraham's seed and have never been any man's servant: why do you say, You will become free?
John 8:34 ^
Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Every one that committeth sin is the bondservant of sin.
John 8:34 ^
And this was the answer Jesus gave them: Truly I say to you, Everyone who does evil is the servant of sin.
John 8:35 ^
And the bondservant abideth not in the house for ever: the son abideth for ever.
John 8:35 ^
Now the servant does not go on living in the house for ever, but the son does.
John 8:36 ^
If therefore the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
John 8:36 ^
If then the son makes you free, you will be truly free.
John 8:37 ^
I know that ye are Abraham's seed: yet ye seek to kill me, because my word hath not free course in you.
John 8:37 ^
I am conscious that you are Abraham's seed; but you have a desire to put me to death because my word has no place in you.
John 8:38 ^
I speak the things which I have seen with [my] Father: and ye also do the things which ye heard from [your] father.
John 8:38 ^
I say the things which I have seen in my Father's house: and you do the things which come to you from your father's house.
John 8:39 ^
They answered and said unto him, Our father is Abraham. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
John 8:39 ^
In answer they said to him, Our father is Abraham. Jesus said to them, If you were Abraham's children you would do what Abraham did.
John 8:40 ^
But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I heard from God: this did not Abraham.
John 8:40 ^
But now you have a desire to put me to death, a man who has said to you what is true, as I had it from God: Abraham did not do that.
John 8:41 ^
Ye do the works of your father. They said unto him, We were not born of fornication; we have one Father, [even] God.
John 8:41 ^
You are doing the works of your father. They said to him, We are true sons of Abraham; we have one Father, who is God.
John 8:42 ^
Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I came forth and am come from God; for neither have I come of myself, but he sent me.
John 8:42 ^
Jesus said to them, If God was your Father you would have love for me, because it was from God I came and am here. I did not come of myself, but he sent me.
John 8:43 ^
Why do ye not understand my speech? [Even] because ye cannot hear my word.
John 8:43 ^
Why are my words not clear to you? It is because your ears are shut to my teaching.
John 8:44 ^
Ye are of [your] father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.
John 8:44 ^
You are the children of your father the Evil One and it is your pleasure to do his desires. From the first he was a taker of life; and he did not go in the true way because there is no true thing in him. When he says what is false, it is natural to him, for he is false and the father of what is false.
John 8:45 ^
But because I say the truth, ye believe me not.
John 8:45 ^
But because I say what is true, you have no belief in me.
John 8:46 ^
Which of you convicteth me of sin? If I say truth, why do ye not believe me?
John 8:46 ^
Which of you is able truly to say that I am a sinner? If I say what is true, why have you no belief in me?
John 8:47 ^
He that is of God heareth the words of God: for this cause ye hear [them] not, because ye are not of God.
John 8:47 ^
He who is a child of God gives ear to the words of God: your ears are not open to them because you are not from God.
John 8:48 ^
The Jews answered and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?
John 8:48 ^
The Jews said to him in answer, Are we not right in saying that you are of Samaria and have an evil spirit?
John 8:49 ^
Jesus answered, I have not a demon; but I honor my Father, and ye dishonor me.
John 8:49 ^
And this was the answer of Jesus: I have not an evil spirit; but I give honour to my Father and you do not give honour to me.
John 8:50 ^
But I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.
John 8:50 ^
I, however, am not in search of glory for myself: there is One who is searching for it and he is judge.
John 8:51 ^
Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my word, he shall never see death.
John 8:51 ^
Truly I say to you, If a man keeps my word he will never see death.
John 8:52 ^
The Jews said unto him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my word, he shall never taste of death.
John 8:52 ^
The Jews said to him, Now we are certain that you have an evil spirit. Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead; and you say, If a man keeps my word he will never see death.
John 8:53 ^
Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died: whom makest thou thyself?
John 8:53 ^
Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? and the prophets are dead: who do you say that you are?
John 8:54 ^
Jesus answered, If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father that glorifieth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God;
John 8:54 ^
Jesus said in answer, If I take glory for myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father who gives me glory, of whom you say that he is your God.
John 8:55 ^
and ye have not known him: but I know him; and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be like unto you, a liar: but I know him, and keep his word.
John 8:55 ^
You have no knowledge of him, but I have knowledge of him; and if I said I have no knowledge of him I would be talking falsely like you: but I have full knowledge of him, and I keep his word.
John 8:56 ^
Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day; and he saw it, and was glad.
John 8:56 ^
Your father Abraham was full of joy at the hope of seeing my day: he saw it and was glad.
John 8:57 ^
The Jews therefore said unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
John 8:57 ^
Then the Jews said to him, You are not fifty years old; have you seen Abraham?
John 8:58 ^
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was born, I am.
John 8:58 ^
Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, Before Abraham came into being, I am.
John 8:59 ^
They took up stones therefore to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.
John 8:59 ^
So they took up stones to send at him: but Jesus got secretly out of their way and went out of the Temple.
